Paypal help
« on: March 24, 2011, 10:18:51 am »
Guys - just received an email from paypal saying they are doing a security check and have restricted my account usage.  When I try and log on I get prompted for all my bank account/credit card details - in fact when I try and do anything I get asked - can't even submit a query email or open another page.

Paypal state they will never ask for passwords etc - but as I cannot access anything other than this page I am wondering whether it is genuine or not?

I can't even call to verify as I can't access their numbers.

Any thoughts

It's spam - phishing - forward it to spoof@paypal com then delete. Do NOT follow any instructions, or click on anything, in the email. HTH.

It's a scam (pretty sophisticated one at that).

You prompted me to check my PayPal and it opens with this message..........

"* PayPal emails will never ask you for personal information such as social security numbers, passwords, credit card or bank account numbers"

"Never Give Out Personal Information

Keep your PayPal account safe and secure; here are some tips every PayPal member should know:

    * Log in safely whenever you access your PayPal account; open a new web browser (e.g. Internet Explorer or Netscape) and type in the following: https://www.paypal.com.au
    * PayPal emails will never ask you for personal information such as social security numbers, passwords, credit card or bank account numbers
    * Never download any attachments in a suspicious email

If you think that you have received a fraudulent email (or fake website link in an email), please forward the email (or URL address) to [email protected] and then delete the email from your mailbox. Visit our Security Centre to learn more."

Paul - would love to call them but cannot access their phone numbers because it prompts me for my details before allowing progression.

Thanks for the email address - shall forward it now.

let you know how I go.

what happens when you log in from another computer to www.paypal.com ?

Always log in directly not from a saved favourite or link !!!!!

you may have a issue on your box where it has loaded up some kinda spambot, you need to clear out your cache and remove all your internet browser cookies.

Try another PC and log into www.paypal and all will be reveilled !

This has happened to me as well as other numerous spams and scams.

some basic rules will keep you covered;

NEVER EVER RESPOND OR LOG ON THROUGH AN EMAIL LINK, TO ANYTHING. IT IS THE ONE MAJOR FUNDAMENTAL FLAW IN THE SYSTEM THAT FRAUDS USE TO PRAY UPON THE UNSUSPECTING.

Make it a permanent new practice to always log in to any type of account connected or related to fiances and purchases etc. through a NEW TAB

If you did give them info? change your passwords IMMEDIATELY, access those sites genuinely through a new tab of course.

Unfortunately if you did respond to the email in any way you will have confirmed a valid email address to
the scammers.

Not that I have anything against the majority of Asians. I love their food and enjoy their female ping pong champs, but so far all of my similar scam experiences and continual bombardment of spams comes immediately after I buy some thing from Asian sellers. I have been offered enough blue smarty's to repopulate the world.

Trouble is their same types of spams and scams keep coming from a different source address each time.
So it makes it hard to block them.

I recognize them through their subject headings now and just delete them with out opening them.

Good luck.

Fortunately I did not use a link to access but went to the paypal australia account - and yep freaky from a couple of computers.  What had me worried was even though it was logging onto paypal (seemed OK) I could access nothing else (help screens, phone numbers, email etc) without being prompted for my account numbers - hence being worried and not supplying anything as yet.

have emailed them via the spoof address so will see what happens.

Often wondered what would happen if you responded to the Nigerian one with.

There must be some mistake you have already deposited " $4200000000" into my account.
If this is incorrect then just give me your bank details and I will return the money minus a 10% handling fee of course.

There seems to be a VERY sophisticated phishing program that looks for changes in PayPal accounts. I had to make a update to my account and not long after I got about 40 emails. It was pretty good, but a genuine email from Paypal will have your full name and your user ID as the heading. Phishing scams do not.
Most of the sophisticated scams are from Russia or Eastern Europe.

Rossco, you been living under a rock?
These scams are as old as the hills.
Warned my father-in-law about these scams when he got interested in the internet.
Still fell for the bank one anyway, serves him right for not listening to me.

It will always be worth there while as there is always a newbie coming along
