That little muffler thingy
« on: March 01, 2011, 09:06:02 am »
The early KX 500's have a little alloy bracket that bolts between the frame and muffler.
I wanted to check how many models they fit but I can't look it up on Zedder if I don't know its name.
I have been searching online parts diagrams (CMSNL) for its name and or part No. but it’s not shown on any diagrams.
Can any one shed some light on this mysterious covert part?

Yes they did arrive thanks Ted, it felt like a 'licky dip' box when I went through it, many thanks.

I actually have a muffler thingy from an 87 KX 250 but I wanted to determine if it was the same as the 83 / 84 500.
Once I have a name or number I can run it through zedder.
I was surprised that it doesn't show up on any of the parts diagrams I looked at

I want to finalise a muffler jig for the 500's so i want to be sure the mount on the muffler is in the right place.
If you could note some measurements from yours would be useful, distance between holes and offset.

RE : 1983 KX 500 A-1 muffler bracket

Hi Geoff...The reason you can`t find the bracket because it was never there in the first place according to the parts catalogue

The pipe on mine was built by the late Geoff Worrall and is running a DG muffler

Hope this helps

It's found on the "FENDERS" diagram on the 83 250 schematic... maybe same for the 500?

HTH ...

Hi Geoff, you can borrow mine if you want to make a copy.  It looks the same on my 84 250 & 500, plus it looks the same as the one on my 86 KX500 cheers steve

The parts pic of the muffler came straight out of the original July 1982 Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd parts book that came with the bike...so i would assume that it`s a given

Thanks Hoony....There are others that disagree with you and me though

They can have their opinion, even if that opinion is wrong  ;)

Thanks guys, this is boring detective work compared to carbon dating a Bultaco, but we’re getting there.

Yes Hardo, found it on the mudguard schematic,
I had only looked on the muffler and frame schematics.
I thought it odd that this part wasn’t shown despite being on several models.
So it’s called a Muffler stay

Part # = 35011-1154
Part Description = MUFFLER STAY
Model Count = 4
KX250-C1 83 250 KX250 MOTOCROSS
KX250-C2 84 250 KX250 MOTOCROSS
KX500-A1 83 500 KX500 MOTOCROSS
KX500-A2 84 500 KX500 MOTOCROSS

It comes up as a different part No to my 87 model, which is different to the 86 model, which is different again to the 85 model!!!!

Thanks for the offer of a loaner but if someone can supply me these dimensions that should be all I need.

It may also be handy if someone can confirm the distance between the 2 mounting holes on the muffler too.

85mm hole centre to hole centre

15mm to 18mm offset ...inside to outside..as drawn

After you found that bracket in the Fender section you would assume they wouldn`t put the lifejackets under the deck chairs on the ships they build..hehe

Thanks for that Ted.

For the record the...
Part # = 35011-1322
Part Description = MUFFLER STAY
Model Count = 2
KX250-E1 87 250 KX250 MOTOCROSS
KX500-C1 87 500 KX500 MOTOCROSS

is 66mm Eye to Eye and 10mm offset.

One last thing...

Can anyone confrim this measurement for the 83 / 84 500?
I was given the measurement of 125mm many years ago but I suspect it's not correct
