i cant speak for the 350 head, but I have sat the xl 500 head (wish full thinking!!) on the husky barrel - no go.

roller rockers are pretty good . i recently replaced mine (84 te with 83 head), but probably didnt need to, and i doubt theyd ever been done. Apart from lunching valves , & associated damage due to the valve springs all the head components seem good, but ive only seen 1/2 a dozen heads, but never a dead cam yet.

Are you particularly wanting to recreate the original, or are you looking for an alternative to the ever dwindling supply and skyrocketing price of husky heads?

Looking for a possible "better" replacement for the hard to find XL350 rockers.  If as it seems the early Husky head was based on the prototype XL350 combination, then it MIGHT be possible that there could be some similarity and possibility of parts swapping.  The XL500 head that you looked at had a much bigger stock bore 89mm than the XL350 and also wider valve spacing/bigger valves.  Can you measure the c-c of the intake and exhaust valve pairs?  That would be a start.

Thanks,
Swiss

Any valvetrain cam area photos would be cool!

What are the differences between the 510 te and tx ?

The 510 TE is the enduro model and the 510 TX is the desert/cross country model, primarily designed for the USA market when desert racing was all the range. TC was the motocross model.

VMX mag issue 19 has a feature article on the 510's and explains a few differences. From memory the different versions had differen amounts of suspension travel, the TE having the least. There was also slight capacity variations if i am remembering correctly. Been ages since i read the article

Recommended read for 510 nuts who have not read it yet

I really like the look of those husky's.  The first time I saw one of these was in the early 90's with the motor in a milk crate.  The second one I saw had the motor in a milk crate as well.  Seemed to be a common theme at the time.

I'm interested to hear if there is any similarity between the Husky and Honda head at all. I read somewhere (and I know this doesn't make it true) that the husky head was developed with a close look at the Jawa 4 valve head. To me this makes more sense. If a company was going to design a new high performance engine why not look at what is the most successful (in terms of power output) head design to date.
I do have access to a 4 valve Jawa, but like my TE510 it is together and looking from the outside doesn't give any clues.
Cheers, Grahame.

Love the way Husqvarna stuck a four stroke top end on more or less a two stroke bottom end, and used a unique system of reed valves to keeping everything lubricated. Rick Sieman gives a description of it...      http://articles.superhunky.com/4/294

I don't think Rick is right about the early type water cooled 4 strokes having a normal oiling system. I thought Husky kept the no mechanical oil pump for quite a while. There is certainly a lot more oil going places in the Husky set up than there is in any 2 stroke.

Links aren't working for me?  The Honda XL350 c-c is 37.7mm..  I think the authuser might limit who can access your pics.  If you have a link just to the album and then I can find the right photos?

my measurements  were hurried, i did get 39mm on exhaust side and 40 on inlet and 40 on rockers, but as i say it was quick.

Here is an English Grasstrack roller rocker head for the XL Honda.  Difference in the cam lobe locations but pretty similar in design.  Can you measure the c-c distance between the rocker pivots?

Thanks,
