Matt Daley, Mt Kembla circa 1967
« on: January 25, 2011, 09:10:36 pm »
Husky Pete was sent these photos this morning by Matt Daley. They were taken by a bloke named Ben Luttikhuizen at what we suspect may have been a championship meeting of some sort at Mt Kembla in (we think) 1967. Matt's Husky appears to be a 66-67 360 Husky Viking which gives us some clue. We've checked the car park photo on as clear a blow up as we can go and can't find a car newer than 1964 which, using the rough theory that very few people drove new cars in those days and those that did wouldn't be the type to attend a scrambles meeting would point towards 1966-67. I'd love to know for sure just what event it was so if anybody can recognise the meeting, please let us know ;D.
Matt Daley is on Husky #15 and we think it's Ray Fisher on #13 Metisse. Any clues on the rider of #1 BSA

Was on a trail ride last Saturday with Matt Daley,he's on a KTM525, I belive 66yrs old and he put a lot of the boys to shame,If we get slower as we get older ,he must have been bloody fast back then.
Gosh its a shame a slow 4 stroke trail bike can go so Fast !!

Great shots Firko, I only went to Kembla a couple of times and my memmory is of an old VW Beetle that was on the infield near the start straight, trials guys used to ride over it and we were amazed that you could do that, how far have we come since then.
I don't know who the guy on the Beeza is but I think his number is actually in the 10's.
On another note, did you get my recent pm?

Firko, I remember travelling to Mt Kembla with my father and other Port Pirie MCC club members for the 1967 Australian Championships and Matt dominated, winning the 250 and 350 events as well as 2nd in the 500 and Unlimited on the Husky.  I think he was #15 that day (I don't know what his regular number was).

Wasn't it mid 67 when Matt was supplied the Huskies ???

Ray Fisher won the Unlimited and 500cc on a Matchless Metisse, but I thought he rode under #33 all the time ?????

Laurie Alderton was also in the mix in the big bore events.

So, I suspect 1967.

The highlight of the trip for me was being taken to Chapel Street in the Cross at age 15.  Have never looked back  :D

Hey guys,  Matt was 15 nearly always and I think you will find the gentleman on the Metisse is Col Evans not Ray and I think it is 1967 as I was there as a spectator as I didnt think I would be competitive on my Cotton as it was 4 years old.

No problems with Matt Daley being #15 Ian and I considered it might have been Col Evans on the Metisse but looking at the riders snoz it definitely looks like Ray Fisher ;). I've just had a look through Jim Scaysbrooks "Australias Motorcycling Heritage" book and the description of the event mentions Matt, Ray Fisher, Aldo, Leon Street winning the 125 class on a Sherpa S ahead of Blair Harley on a Kawasaki, Geoff Taylor debuting the boat tail Pursang in the 250 class and coming in behind Daley's Husky, rookie Chris Richardson on a CZ coming third in the 250 but no mention of Col Evans anywhere. Ditto the AMCN coverage of the event which mentions the 500 and Unlimited classes being fought out by Les Fisher, Laurie Alderton on his BSA B44GP and Matt on the Husky. There's no mention of Col Evans at all in either publication.
Methinks Col Evans would still have been in the UK with Roy East in 1967.

I am 99% sure I was spectating that meeting and have some   Kodak slides somewhere . These old slides had the processing date stamped on them so I must conduct a search.
I think the nose belongs to Col. I remember the controversy over Col applying for the race No.13, as previously that number was not ever issued by the ACU up till Col pursued it.
A good source for this type of info is the original TwoWheels paper if any one has access to them or the old "green horror.
I have a plastic bag full of old slides that I have sorted away from family stuff for Sliderulze to put on foto forum for me one day!
 cheers pancho.
dont follow me i'm probably off line!
