Eml Rebuild
« on: January 08, 2011, 10:21:51 am »
Started on the Eml yesterday, all shocks in to be rebuilt and gearbox at the engineers to be back cut, just need to get a new clutch sorted and fix fuel tank, hopefully we will have a better year than last, also waiting for finial results from tests from little get off 6 mths ago and all should be good. Some new sidecars are also being built by Hollaway engineering, and Fletcher enterprisers, so we should have a good year with some new people joining in the fun. :) :)
IN IT FOR THE FUN OF IT. LIKE MR NIKE SAYS JUST DO IT.

Should have the big XR ready for you to try in a week or so. Alloy frame hopfully. Did they have alloy in 1984?-of course they did.
Checking with Switzerland as to the elegibility Waynes EML single shock, should fit in the pre'85 catagory as Jumbos were built in '84 for '85 races, might throw a cat in with the pidgeons though.

So you agree that if I build a DR500 with an alloy sidecar like we had in '82 that will be period specific?

:o :o ...is that a British job, cause us Aussies are usually a bit more reserved in our bling  ;D
She'd get looks for a pre75 Nats, though Hagon and Yammie have geen around for awhile.. :P

wouldnt aluminium be too harsh, ridgid an prone to cracking? I know its no longer favoured for bicycle frames for those reasons.
Wanted - 1978 TS185 frame or frame&motor. Frame # TS1852-24007 up to TS1852-39022

I have a vague memory of Ton van Heuten winning on one though I don't think he won a WM on it, just some GPs or inters.
Robin Jones had one when he was in S.A. bt wasn't too impressed with it and I think Rocky from ASA has one. There was one at the Broadford Classic when we went in '09 but it wasn't ridden. As with most Hagons they aren't much lighter but they do look trick. The mag wheels were going to be the 'go' back then but didn't take off and I think they had some spectacular failures.
Would be nice to have in a collection but not sure about racing one.

Leigh, the DR500 we raced was very strong-it was the sidecar only, not the bike frame, and even after we collected a tree and tore some welds halfway through, it still hung together and we finished the days racing.
It tore the steering stem clean off the frame at the head during the ACUSA park nationals in 1983 and we welded it back together overnight and raced the open class on the sunday. It was a really good thing with very little development, though Geoff Udy could ride a broomstick quicker than alot of the rest could drive their outfits.
If we had have stuck to the 500 fourstroke as the junior class the sidecars would have lasted alot longer before the twostrokes took over as they were very good fun to race and could knock off the bigger twins and multis on a good day.

As I remember, The DR 500 you raced EML, was around 750cc like the one Max and I had. I have some good memories of great dices with that alloy framed DR. ;D
