My VR project - what's it worth?
« on: December 26, 2010, 10:42:21 pm »
Having a bit of a Tony moment here, and trying to work out whether its worth selling. I know I'll miss it if I sell it, but I'm chasing cash and all the rest...

74 VR250 in bits.

The good points are:
New bore (first OS) & new piston kit.
Spare 2nd OS piston kit.
Good chrome on the forks. New seals (not fitted).
New TAG alloy bars.
New Magura levers.
Good Magura throttle.
New grips & kill switch.
New YSS 302 shocks (not 100% sure on the model number - they cost me $1000/pair though....).
2x new rear sprockets.
1x new front sprocket.
New quality X-ring chain.
new black mudguards.
New repro airbox.
36mm Mikuni.
Brand new GMC pipe.
Spare 73M bottom end (crank fuct, gearbox should be fine).
Brand new Michelin tyres (MH3 F, S12 R).
Some resto work already begun - swing arm blasted, brake plates refinished, triple clamps polished, clutch & ignition covers file finished, etc.
Frame seems clean and crack/bend-free.

Bad points:
Has the 'in the day' Lyall O'Brien lay down shock mod (original mounts there, but needing repair).
Both wheels need respoking, unless someone knows of a solution to the corroded nipple dramas.
Needs a seat base & cover.
Some damage & old repair behind the stator cover (the usual kick-starter issue).

There's also about half a 54M parts bike, and possibly a nearly complete 74 King Scorpion if it really made a difference.

So... I know I'll take a big hit financially if I sell it, but what sort of money should I expect if I decide to get rid of it?
Obviously, stuff like tyres, handlebars and the chain are useful for any bike, so I'd be happy to keep them.

When I got it:

I have owned 4 VR, l paid $2000 for a complete original VR.
$350 for another one.
 $1000 for a 73 model VR.
$1000 for the last 74 VR model.
Nathan s your VR l would be happy to pay $1000 to $2000  dollar.  and then spend another $2500 plus to restore it.

Geeze Nathan,
The last time I spoke to you about the Monty I basically begged you to sell  :( :( now just after Christmas on the one day I don't visit the site you're thinking about plonking it on the market  :o :'(

Hope you would want it to stay in Heaven and back on the track ;)

Would like to make you an offer, but cash reserves are low at the moment, post Christmas, holiday etc.   Bought my VR without telling the wife, won't get away with that again!!

Price, without the parts I would say around $1000, complete and finished around $3-4000?

Let me know if you would like to sell the second o/s piston?

Yeah, I know... If it makes you feel any better, you're one of the three people that I'd be happiest to sell it to if I decide to.

Seeing as the perfectly functional MX250 seems to be like herpes to potential buyers, its started me wondering whether I'm better off keeping it and selling the VR. The MX is clearly the inferior bike, but I can ride it without spending another cent on it - whereas the Monty still needs more money & time spent on it...

Call me tomorrow and we'll see what happens.
The good thing about telling the truth is that you don't have to remember what you said.

does the serial number state its 1974 model, the muffler on that bike itn`t genuine, the bike may be a 250 V75 model or 76 model. the stripes on the tank are not 74 model colours.

It's a V75 pipe or later alright. People never put the right colour tank stickers back on if they've done a re-paint ???....

This bike seems to be cursed.....it's been through three or four owners to my knowledge but for whatever reason nobody seems to be able to do much with it.  ???
