80` PE drive hub
«

wanting to re-pack the bearings in the drive hub on the PE, there are two that are together. which way are they suppose to come out. through the inside of the drum or are they suppose to come out on the out side of the hub. do i need a special tool. have been using a flat head screw driver an have been carefully taping around the diameter of the bearings but havnt had any movement in them. dont want to go to hard on them as i dont really want to destroy them. any tips would be appreciated. cheers.

Do you mean the bearings in the sprocket carrier or the actual rear hub laced to the rim?
I wouldnt bother with repacking them. Fit modern sealed bearings. SKF have the best seals, but others are ok.

Pe man, the 2 bearings together on sproket carrier ( # 6005 = 2 of ) exit via sprocket side.
then you have a bearing either side of your hub ( # 6203 ) they exit via a bearing puller ..... or screw driver method
Ok ... face the sproket on 2 pices of timber allowing enough clearance around your bearings , grab a socket that will rest on the bearing face now belt the farker with a lump hammer ..... job done.

Oh Stewy, I love your ability in how to get the message across.."the farker with a lump hammer".
By the way, Merry Christmas to you and family, we'll talk in the New Year perhaps. Do you have you any time off over the break?

Pete, the ole girl tells me it's time to do a bit of painting
with a bit of luck the rain might ruin that plan

I cant remember how i got my sprocket carrier ones out. i think i may have used a drift or maybe heated it up so the bearings dropped out? For the hub i just push the spacer tube to one side and use a drift to get the bearings out. i like to fit the new ones with the hub warmed up though so the bearings go in easier.

yea got new bearings for my wheel hubs, just waiting for them to get back. getting new rims put on. forgot to get them for the sprocket carrier. ended up getting the bearing outs. just didnt want to muck around with them with out knowing how they come out. didnt want to damage anything. the clymer manual didnt show how to take them out of the sprocket carrier. all good now. bearing are still fine in the sprocket carrier. i know itll be a good idea to put new ones in. but reckon ill just repack these for now. not a big deal to put new ones in later down the line, if i feel it needs them. thanks anyways LWC.
