Motocross des Nations 1981 (Diary Entries ...)
« on: December 16, 2010, 12:37:29 am »
Sorry about all the dumb exclamation marks.

I was 24.   Hitching and hosteling in northern Europe, Autumn approaching.

I was having trouble getting to this track, as there were two towns named Bielstein.
Story takes up with a lift off a little fat German guy who spoke no English ...

That was an exceptional couple of days in a blokes life Roger.....I felt I was travelling with you, you described your experiences dso well.  I wish I'd have kept a diary during my own travels.....most of it has been forgotten now, more's the pity. :'(

Top Notch Doggy Digger.
We kept similar dairy of '87 when with the sidecars.
Gathered all sorts of memoribillia, Hansi said I got more in 6 months than he had from his whole lifetime  ;D
I wrote race reports to send to Motorcyle News but none were published-sidecars don't rank with their readers. I still have most and tons of photos.
Ahh well-in another life......

No not a GP but an international in the heart of the champaigne region. Built in a WW1 fort where you raced through the old trenches- trenches are in fact several feet high and several wide and built on a chalk base-the caves underneath are where the champaigne is kept at the correct temp. Gets very slippery when wet, which it did get during one race.
We finished 12th. after much ado and a cracked rear swing-arm.

Like so many Aussies, I'd taken a year off to go backpacking around Europe - and beer-drinking in London.   I was always going to go to motocrosses too, of course.
Back then, I was really, tragically obsessed with MX.   There aint many sports like motocross in the world.

Thanks to everyone for encouragement and interest in diaries.   This was the last MX one to post.   (I don't have any more :))

Merry Christmas everyone

RH
