Wayne, what is it in particular you are looking for. I still have my Old service manual for a KX 250 a
tank strip  ....  74 is inline
colour of guards   .... white is 74
rear shock position ....

1974 .....
If I can relate to suzuki Tm 250 1974 to 75  ...... rear shock positions on swing arm and frame mount are the give away.

Lime green tank and white guards could be either '74 or '75. One of the easiest way's to tell is the front brake hub, '74 is full width hub, '75 is conical. '74 had KYB "hammerhead" shocks & white ovals which screw to the air box, '75 is different. The suspension is the main reason which prevent's '75 from being 'pre '75 legal.
Cheers,
K

Wayne the best way you would relate the diiferences would be a 74 is like a Tm 125 and 75 , 76 are like an RM 125S . Motor changed fork all but rolling frame is way superior , 75 & 76 different paint and colour mudgaurds.

Big K has summed it up well , motor aside they are very different bikes . The late Barry Senn told me the 74 KX 250 is the closest thing you will get to a 74 RH 250 and Barry had 74 RH, TM, YZ, CR and KX so he new what was what.

Where as i call my 76 a grown ups RMS because thats what its like to ride , an RMS with 50% more power ;D

Both really cool bikes , if you got the chance grab either. I think the 74 is worth more as its pre 75 legal and rarer.

I agree, they are really nice looking bikes, 75 has forward  mounted shocks and is not pre 75 but still cool bike. Bill has that KX400 sold yet, my palms are sweating.

Too much desirable stuff coming up at the moment Bill, like your good self I have to prioritise. Also I kind of prefer to wait for a 74 250 to come up.

Bill
the differences are
The 74 has a full width front brake
Frame is different as is the swing arm
axle size on the rear is smaller, hub is different
Triples are different as are the forks (but look close)
Seat is different
There are some motor differences that wont effect the 74 eligibility if your were to use a 75/76 donk.
The 74 is a rare bird and Barry Senn is right, having both I can confirm that the KX motor is every bit as good as the RH however the KX is let down in the handling stakes.
If you do find a 75/76 dont bother to try an conver it to a 74 - it wont be worth it and you will wreck a good bike in the 75/76 which are a rare and under rated bike as well and bloody fast.
One modification to make will be to use the conicle hub from the later bike if you were to do a 74 as its a safety matter. The 74 hub backing plate had a habit of destroying itself, to do this mod you will need to the 75/76 forks.
If someone turned up at a meeting I wouldnt have an issue with this mod. (my one has the original 74 as im not sure if its going to see much racing)
Any questions Bill send me a tag - happy to help out
PS
Barry and I used to talk about the whole Suzuki / Kawasaki thing a lot; funny thing Ive got KX's - even a KLX400R or a DRZ in green. Quite amusing, Barry would see the funny side.

Barry was a good bloke. I didn't know him all that well but had done a bit of wheeling and dealing with him over the years and liked him. He could ride too.

Thanks Dave but its Dodgee whos looking at buying one . I have a 76 250 A3 and now i have Barrys 74 250A so bases are covered.
Appreciate the tip about the front hubs , i didn't know that and plan to race the 74 at some events next year.

I love my 76 its a really cool bike , i know that back in the day they were a way behind the other brands but man that thing puts a smile on my dial  ;D

If i become financial enough ( and my Brisbane mates will baby sit them for me  ;D ) i would like to send my 74 KX 125 and 250 over there as my Aussie race bikes  :)

More green on the scene would be nice.

Many a night Barry and I would discuss the impact Ole Peterson had on Kawasaki after he left Suzi in 74? And the loss to Suzi of him leaving. Ahh the bullshit - I miss that. The's a lot more to the DNA of Suzi and Kawa that confirms they are related  ;)
