Traditionally womens bikes had a sloping top bar, but thats not really used much these days on proper bikes but you can still find cheap 'throwaway' department store bikes like that.

yup, the old girly sweat machines were kind of like a step thru..

jeez, I even remember the skirt guards for the rear wheel made from stretchy elastic strings and a mudguard with a zillion holes along the edges, obligatory pullback type bars with hard plastic grips. the 6v dynamo electrics and the basket on the front.  I also remember accidently putting my foot in the front spokes and both my brother and I going over the bars at the school gate in front of everyone..how embarrassment! ::) he told me the handlebars was a perfectly safe place to sit!! Cost me 5 new spokes out of my pocket money th swine :( funny thing is I don't ever remember it hurting..except on the inside :D

if you go to europe you will find proper bikes by the millions, not the cheap stuff sold in Australia. The quality and price of bicycles in Germany make ours look truly lame. Look up Kettler for example. Superb things.
