RECREATIONAL MOTORCYCLING IS A TOURIST BOOM
The Motorcycle Council of NSW (MCC of NSW) calls upon the NSW state government to immediately introduce Recreational Registration for off-road motorcycles along the lines of the Victorian model.
The benefits of such a scheme would be massive in terms of both financial and environmental rewards. For example:
• Regional tourism and businesses would profit hugely from recreational motorcyclists visiting various rider-friendly regions.
• A new wave of contributions to the CTP Scheme from riders who ordinarily would not contribute due to the nature of their hobby.
• The environmental impacts on our precious State Forests and National Parks would be significantly reduced with designated and dedicated one-way tracks designed for riders of all abilities, thus offering riders a legal alternative to riding illegally on unmarked or unsuitable trails.
It is clear that enforcement has, and will continue to fail, so it is incumbent upon the NSW state government to act in a positive and pro-active manner in this regard.
The MCC of NSW believes education, consultation and co-operation are the keys to a sustainable and economically beneficial recreational motorcycle segment of the growing tourism market.
The Chairman of the Motorcycle Council of NSW, Rob Colligan said: “For decades authorities have used the head-in-the-sand approach to recreational motorcycling. They tried to make it just go away, but these riders did not go away. In fact, their numbers kept increasing every year. So now is the time to set up a system that engages these riders in a mature and fully consultative manner.
“Many regions of Victoria rely on the tourism dollars that flow in as a result of their towns embracing recreational riders,” Mr Colligan went on to state. “With regional economies struggling in NSW, riders would flock to areas that offered good riding, good facilities and a welcoming attitude. It’s not rocket science. Give us an affordable scheme and riders will make sure that everyone benefits.”
