Who's your top 5 motocrossers?
« on: November 02, 2010, 10:33:03 pm »
OK, who's your top 5 motocrossers of all time?...NO supercross riders!!...Mine are 1/ Sefan Everts 2/ Joel Robert 3/ Rodger De Coster 4/ Joel Smets 5/ Bob Hanna. They all have/had different styles but where all champions and have left the sport better off and influenced thousands of riders. They all had there weaknesses (except maybe Sefan) but pushed on through and never said die.

Jimmy Weinert - for having the best time.
Heikki Mikkola - for disipline
Bob Hannah - attitude
Brad Lackey - determination
Rick Sieman  :D :D Certainly not the fastest, but there's not many blokes that have committed their lives to the sport like he has.  ;)

Hanna took no prisoners or bullshit on the track.....Smets was the "TERMINATOR" of motocross, just a machine that told his bike what to do "you will do dis turn".....DeCoster wasnt the most talented but trained and trained and trained and trained and won....Robert was a natural talent, poetry.......Everts was the next step up ...float like a butterfly, sting like a bee!!...all legends.

Ezra Lusk
and a toss up between Johan Boonen & Matts Nilllson

In no particular order and would probably be different next year.

1 Gaston Rahier
2 Jeff Leisk
3 Stefan Everts
4 Joel Robert
5 Jim Weinert

Saw Gaston do a demo at Ipswich [ forgot the name of the place ] . Tivoli that,s it. Mid 70,s.
Anyhow he only lapped everyone twice I think. Was landing on front wheel going into corners. Unheard of back then.
Good choice for 1. :)

Joel Robert......the king
Marty Tripes.....Smoothest rider I ever saw.
Per Klitland......My first motocross hero. Introduced European style riding to Australia
Heikki Mikkola...The toughest bugger to ever throw a leg over a motocross
Guy Cooper...Introduced big air time before it became a fashion statement.

* I'll add the late Gaylon Mosier to the list as #6 purely because he was as cool as shit. The man had an attraction to the ladies like no other rider of his time. I observed him for a whole weekend at Saddleback Park back in the mid 70's and he was slicker than a teflon factory, without the bluster of Hannah, gift of the gab of Weinert or rock star presence of Lackey. He was also a really nice bloke and could certainly ride those Maicos, especially at Carlsbad or Saddleback.

How cool is this shot of Mosier on a Maico circa 1976

Has there ever been a great SX rider who hasn't also been a great MX rider?
Even guys like Reed & McGrath who have signed SX-only contracts during their careers would have to be worthy of consideration as top MXers.

A random list of riders who I think are "great", although my criteria is very wobbly and entirely inconsistant:

1. Jeff Ward. Obviously he was a seriously good rider, but he's included on my list because I saw a doco on the history of US MX and he was a zillion times more down-to-earth than I expected.

2. Bob Hannah. For entirely the opposite personality reasons to Ward. 30 years on and he's still as self assured as ever. The lack of false humility (both then and now) is a marked change from most of the other riders of the era.

3. Jeff Leisk. Which 8 year old isn't impressed by the Gun rider of the time?

4. Glen Bell. As above, but substitute "8 year old" with "14 year old". I also think he's hugely under-rated as a rider because he didn't venture outside Australia much, and was at the peak of his career while his kids were young.

5. Ah, I'm bored typing... Let's go with TM Bill.
The good thing about telling the truth is that you don't have to remember what you said.

Pete Mathia...(81 british 125 champ).....dam good rider and very approachable bloke in uk vmx.

He won the UK twinshock champs about two years ago. Went down in the record books as the greatest gap between national championships.

TFT's top 5 in no particular order.

1) Joel Robert (Most talented of them all).
2) Heikki (hard man and nice guy)
3) Joel Smets (ditto)
4) Greg Albertyn (IMO too many people overrate Stefan. Greg whipped his arse whenever they competed)
5) Roger.

Nearly runs:

Dave Thorpe
Guennady Moiseev (tarred by the Falta incident, he went on to win the championship fair and square)
Harry (Fark, who needs handicapped parking? Harry overcame his disablity to become one of the greats)

Yanks? I'm cautious about them. SX ain't MX and the the yanks treat MX as if it's a sideshow. But I'll let in the following (because they were real men and were prepared to put up with the deprivations of following the world circus):

Trampas
Donnie.
