1974 Maico single shock?
« on: October 31, 2010, 08:32:52 pm »
Hi

Just been looking through a Two Wheels magazine from January 1974 at an article about the works Yamaha YZ 250 GP motocross bike and there were 2 photos of a Maico single shock bike.
It ran, by the looks, a similar set up as that of the Yamaha cantilever rear end.
Anyone know more about these bikes?

cheers

yes thats right, look when the yamaha 360 yz was born in 1974, people in the motocross world started to copy the work that was done by yamaha, l have a photo of a 74 cz 250 mono- shock that my brother took at a race meeting in England back then. And yes the Maico mono shock is around but know one is smart enought to  bring it out again, Its All KGB Top Secret Wank stuff.

It's not a monoshock, it's a twin shock. Jack Pengally's bike is a home made Kramer replica made, as Paul and others say, by Keith Stacker. Kramer made a cantilever Maico frame circa 1973/74 which unfortunately didn't work because the shocks of the day couldn't handle the load. With today's shock technology it may just work. Cheney and later KSI used the same setup on their frames.

It was an interesting concept, but what's the advantage? Apart from being different?  :D

I imagine it puts the weight up a bit higher.  :-\
