1984 RM500 Hybrid - Melbourne
« on: October 26, 2010, 11:08:25 am »
1984 RM500 Hybrid - Melbourne. RM500 motor in RM250 frame. Similar idea to the bike Marty Moates rode in 1984. Unknown history, but the frame mods are done well.  Slowly rebuilt over the last 8 years. Did a few Viper races last year. Bike ran good but rider was pathetic. Jetting not 100% but runs better now with new standard jets and floats (although this model Mikuni carb has no idle jet).  All bearings, bushes and seals replaced, except for the transmission bearings which seemed to be in good condition. Bought this transmission from a wrecker who had it on the shelf since the late 80s.

  • New brake shoes.
  • Tires only done a handful of races.
  • Rear shock rebuilt by Bruce Lindsdal.
  • Heavier forks springs have helped, .38 I think they are.
  • Frame checked & welded at Bob Martin's a few years back.
  • GMC muffler.
  • Piston 0.40 oversize, in good nick.
  • RM465 tank fitted. Still have RM250 tank and radiator guards.
  • Larger DRZ400 footpegs fitted but have original footpegs.

Moving, so unfortunately this bike must go.
Price: $4000.

cheers,
Jady

Up on eBay once again:

Maybe it isn't the right season to sell an RM500?

I reckon you should list it under collectors bikes - not trail bikes - it doesn't show up for people who are looking at that era where you have it currently unless you specifically search for an RM500 - add another category.

I'd rather not sell it either but we're heading overseas to live next year and I have to get rid of stuff... no good having a good dirt bike collecting dust in the shed. I'm suprised to see my eBay listing has 43 watchers and no bids... there sure are some spectators out there.

Cheers

A bloke came around for a look at this bike today. As fate would have it, I couldn't get the bike started while he was here.

The kickstart on the RM500 seems to be a weak point; the circlip holding the kickstart lever on kept unclipping and the entire lever would fall off. Fairly embarassing when you can't start your own bike when a prospective buyer is here for a look.

We ended up pushing it down the street, and it took off in a cloud of two-stroke smoke. A lady pushing a pram yelled abuse; this RM is fairly LOUD.. (Thanks Tony and brother for the help today!)

I forgot how hard it is sometimes to start an RM500... took many, many kicks, fresh fuel and a new spark plug. I did eventually get it started so I took a short video:

I got one bid on the eBay listing, so it looks like the bike might now be sold, but I haven't heard from them yet...

cheers
