Is the world going crazy? Would anyone really pay that much? I think just because the exchange rate is good here, the Americans think they can just jack up the prices just because they think now Aussies have  cash to spend.

Jim, it,s pretty obvious that the bloke selling the 16k Goldie in Switzerland couldn't afford one of those Lyta tanks too. There's one of those Albin/Monark engines on Frank Stanboroughs bench right now being built for one of the good 'ol boys.

Those Lyta tanks are indeed quality items. They were all handmade on wooden bucks and an English wheel by one bloke, whose name escapes me (Lyon maybe?). Frank Stanborough went to his factory 10 years ago and met the bloke and was blown away to find that the company that supplied thousands of BSA B44,B50 and many other notable tanks was located in a rented two car garage behind a suburban house :o. I've got a Lyta trials tank and B44 and B50 items and reckon the workmanship is superb, all of the welds are done by oxy too....not a TIG weld in site.

Having said that, the bloke selling the tank on eBay is going for the big speculation punt. It's $2000 overpriced on his Buy it Now price. A friend has one on his TRIBSA road race bike and he reckons that if the bloke gets that money, he'll sell one of his to cash in on the loonies with big wallets that must be out there. He bought one with a minor dent off eBay a year or so ago for $400 and everyone thought he'd paid top dollar.

You can buy a new one for 450 pounds....http://www.thetankshop.com/goodies.html

Wow....It goes to show that if you've got something that's a tad rare someone out there will want it. Jim, Lyta tanks are beautifully made and the company's no longer in business but there are literally thousands of them out there...he made all of the BSA dirt bike tanks for years, thousands of them. I've got four Beeza tanks myself plus a HiPoint (made by Lyta) on my Ducati. Those Beeza Clubman tanks were the hot ticket on Cafe Racers during the 60's/70's and still look cool but they're not worth that kind of money. As I said, my mate has a genuine one on his TRIBSA he bought for $400 off eBay only a year or so ago. Those Irish made Tank Factory replicas are actually as good or even better than the originals according to my old mate Frank who owns tanks from both makers. For the equivalent of $750AU, I'd be saving myself $1500.
A no brainer I reckon.

If you have the cash to play around with DB34, 7Rs, manx's etc then I think that is not an unreasonable sum. When you are bidding on this stuff you are also probably bidding against retired litigation lawyers with MV collections.

It is not unusual for Manx rep to soak up 60-70K ... so spending a couple of grand on a decent tank is nothing.
