After flicking through my newly aquired Aprilia book seems being the HP and handling kings dates back to year dot. Late 70's and early 80's aircooled 125's quoted as 30HP, 250's 40HP water cooled 125's 34HP and water cooled 250's about 47HP. I'll post some scans up when I stop drooling.

Hmm, some creative accounting on the part of the marketing dept methinks. Lozza, what motor were they using at that time?

Having looked inside many Italian kart and motorcycle engines they are in a word 'uncompromised', although quoted at the crank, I would have no doubt they have these sort of outputs. The air cooled engines are named 'Hiro' and the water cooled engines are very early Rotax 122/123 engines.

Yeah, all very well stuffing 50HP to the tar. Stuffing it to dirt, and keeping the bike controllable, is a different matter.

Most modern 250's seem to get the 45HP to the ground with enough control.

Yeah but they have power valves. Powervalves IMO saved the 2 stroke.
