Classic Dirt Bike Issue 16
« on: August 18, 2010, 01:53:59 pm »
Probably the best one yet in my less than humble opinion.  ;D

The features include a good one on Wasp side cars for those who have trouble balancing on 2 wheels. Really interesting BSA Goldstar test, cool looking YZ 490 powered husky, Hagon frame RM125 and to give them some cred a full page advert fro VMX magazine with Super hunky endorsing it.

So much more interesting effort this time/ ;D

But not a global magazine on the scale of VMX, but if you like keeping up with the Poms and a lot of Brit bike content then it is great.

I am a sucker for the hot rod B44s that seem to dominate pre 65.

not a global magazine on the scale of VMX
We're very lucky to have three great magazines dedicated to old dirt bikes and the history behind them. With Mitch seeming to finally have his act together at Moto Retro, the slow but steady improvement of CDB* and the continuing superb quality of VMX, we now have unprecedented information at our disposal. If you add Jim Scaysbrook's great Old Bike Australia and Classic Bike and Classic Racer from the UK to the mix, the old bike collector/racer/admirer is now more than adequately looked after.

Of all of those mags I reckon VMX shines brightest, if only for the quality of it's layout and photographic detail. If you add the depth, research and accuracy of the behind the articles and the variety of feature bikes, the others have a long way to go. Having said that, each magazine has a place in the overall picture and contribute to the movement and our knowledge in their own unique way. I like 'em all but love VMX.
I was wondering why I hadn't received my copy of CDB and just realised that I've let my subscription for run out.  I'd better fix that once I finish this post.

I agree I mean VMX has never gone for cut rate presentation or print quality. But it is a private business owned by people who understand the key selling points of the magazine and are for example enthusiasts themselves. Plus old Bill just can't take a bad photo.

The Pommy mags Classic Racer etc, tend to be owned by printing empires and are just a part of a stable of specialist magazines from the same company, so I guess cost is a bigger issue across a group of publications. If 'Ferret Felchers Monthly' has a low circulation cost cuts are made across the whole group.

No I believe in a cost cutting excercise 'Ferret Felchers' will now be included in 'Banging Badgers' .... both activites can be rewarding with the use of prophalatic chain mail gloves.  ;)

It must be my suburban, catholic upbringing but I'd never heard of felching. I'm still in mild shock after looking it up on Wikipedia. I was eating vanilla yogurt at the time which may explain the half empty tub in the trash bin. ::)
