Montesa Advice
« on: August 14, 2010, 10:19:58 am »
Can someone give me an idea what I've just bought?  :D
Here's a couple of photos:

I'd appreciate any info like year and model etc etc.
Are the forks correct? They don't look quite right to me, but I wouldn't know........  ::)

Yes, you've brought a Montesa ;D
Your really getting into the old stuff now Tony.

Looks to my untrained Spanish eye like a H6 enduro.
Perfect for Harrow next year if it is.

Don't ask me the actual year and model designation - I find it all very confusing. Jared might be along shortly to help out.

Nice pick up - looks fairly original including the forks.

All I can ask Tony is… WHAT'S NEXT?  :o

Excellent! Thanks Jared.
Once I've actually got it, is there a way to tell which year it is by numbers etc?

All I can ask Tony is… WHAT'S NEXT?  :o

Well, now that you mention it............ I always thought the Ancillotti Scarab 250 looked really cool. Tall, with that little tank.............  ;)

Nailing down the exact year is tough.
I suppose a low number would indicate an earlier
model, but I can't say where the break would be at.

I love Monty mxers but the model designations for the Enduros do my head in! ???
Having a down pipe I thought that would have to be from around '77. But with the leading axle forks I'd be thinking later. But later on they didn't have leading axle at all. Later on again, (H7) they had leading again! ??? ???

Those shocks look really laid forward like on a VA ('76). Didn't the later model enduro shocks ('79) stand more vertical like on the Cappras?

Sorry Tony. I didn't mean to confuse. It's all so.........confusing. When you get some engine numbers put them up.

Ross, you don't know what a relief it is to hear both you and Jared having probs with the Enduro's  ;D - it seems Montesa played mix and match with available parts and there does not appear to be a progression in the development from model to model during the late 70's   ::) - and the model designation doesn't help much  :P.

Ok, I've got the baby home and I've already got questions.......  ::)
It's got tonnes of compression and selects all gears, so that's promising!  ;D
It looks like it hasn't done a lot of work. e.g. original stickers on the fork legs, little plastic plugs in the frame, rear wheel speedo drive working, pipe in excellent condition, seat cover has only one small tear...........
Anyway, to start off with, can anyone suggest a source for an original pipe guard/bash plate or repro item?
It's also got the stock Amal carb. Is that bad? Anything I need to know? I notice Drakie running a Mikuni.  :-\
Also, it came with a metal headlight with the metal blackets that mount on the fork legs. Every other 77-79 250 enduro I've seen has a headlight with a plastic surround/number plate. Any suggestions there? Is it likely to be original?
No doubt, many more questions to come. Thanks in advance.  ;D

For fibreglass bits,

http://www.rpmsfiberglass.com/

This style headlight were metal. What you have is not a variation is it?

I'm not expert but I know some who are familiar with the Amals reckon they get a bad rap, especially the early model ones. One of the attraction of the Mikuni's is that they are well known with spares and jets readily available. Lots of people have swap Mikuni's for Amals and Bings etc over the years and there is probably a lot of advice readily available.

Thanks Graeme,
Yeah that looks like the headlight/speedo combo I've got. Might be another case of Montesa fitting whatever they had in the parts bin at the time?
I guess I'll see how it runs before worrying too much about the Amal.
Drakie's seems to run clean, so it won't be hard to get the Mikuni info off him if need be.
Just got to find some time to do all this stuff now.  :)
