KX 500 1983 pipe Help
« on: August 13, 2010, 01:40:13 pm »
Surely someone has one of these in Victoria??....(as seen on Marks swapmeet)

Hello all , i need some help if you can. Would any one in the LA.CA. area have a complete KX500 1983 with a good original pipe and silencer for sale or hire , as i have a need for one to fabricate some pipes for this model. I can arrange transport . I have a local reliable honest guy to oversee all of this and some one coming over from Australia soon to help as well. My research has shown there is no aftermarket pipes available for this model, and hope to have a quantity made. Any help or feed back (world wide) would be geatly appreciated .
cheers Robin Gregory

I'm pretty sure Geoff Morris Concepts has done pipes for these. He's near Broadford Vic.
And you won't find better workmanship anywhere.  ;)

Yes GMC has made a pipe for the KX500A1.  I have seen it and it looks sensational, as do all his pipes.  He has it all jigged and ready to go.

I've got a GMC pipe on my '84 KX500 (which is the same as the '83 pipe) and it's a beautiful piece of work.. it looks like a 'factory' pipe.

John,
I think someone had told you a furphy. The 83 & 84 pipes are very different. The stinger diameter is different by 2 maybe 3 mm. The fitting into the head is completely different between them and don't interchange. An 84 engine and pipe will fit the 83 frame and vice versa, but not individual parts. When i first discussed this with Geoff about 18 months ago i think that he was going to come up with a solution that would allow his pipe to fit either bike, i just don't know how he achieved it, perhaps he will see this and give us an explanation.

If my memory serves me well, Geoff was going to put some thought into being able to produce a pipe that would fit either bike with small mods, im just not sure how he achieved it.

Primarily the pipes are the same fitment with the exception of....
# Engine spigot, 84 has O-ring grooves, 83 doesn't, otherwise are the same size
# stinger dia.  - 84 is larger.

I can build either spec. out of the same jig.

I have made the prediction though that most will want the 84 spec. stinger to run with modern mufflers.

I jigged this pipe from my 83 and it seems the 4th pipe I have built has fitted Johnnys 84 OK.
Pipes 2 & 3 I haven't heard from so I assume they have fitted OK
But pipe No 1 has come back claiming to not fit quite right allthough it fits back in the jig as snug as any of the others.
I'm at a bit of a loss as to why and I'm wondering if he had the proper mounts. I have some overseas orders for these pipes that I have put on hold until I can be sure what the problem is.

Is their anyone close to Broadford with  KX 500 that I could come to and check the fitting of this pipe?  Mine is a basket case without plastics so judgement is a bit iffy and the guys that I know have one are all a cut lunch drive away.

Wait your turn young Davey.
I just pushed a PE 400 pipe out the door last night, young Frosty was lucky he didn't burn his hands on the welds when he picked it up :D
And I'm sure a guy has been waiting for his KDX 175 pipe longer than you ;D

The fact that you notice such things is sure to make me nervous in your presence,
and besides, it was just what I was wearing that makes it seem that way ;D
