I spannered a few times for my mate Ricky Day at the Royale in the early 70's and I never saw a more professional rider than Mr Magic.......He gets my vote as the best rider I ever saw at The Sydney Showground..... :o ;D :o ;D

Ricky Day was a one track specialist. While he was always at the pointy end at the Showground, he was "just another rider" at other tracks. As good as Ricky was at the "Showy", Jim Airey gets my vote as the best, at one stage during the late 1960s Airey won 33 consecutive scratch races at the Showground, something never matched by any other rider.  My mate Chris Ellis owns the very ESO on which Airey held the lap record for many years. This is the bike that had been fitted with Hilborn/McGee fuel injection, the mount for the Hilborn fuel pump off the cam drive still on the bike. Chris also owns the Jawa Geoff Curtis was killed on at the Showground in 1973....the last person killed there I believe.

I'm pretty sure Dave's vote is for Jim Airey as well Firko, as he is mine.
Yes GC was the last person killed at the Royale.

Correctomundo Steve, I misread Dave's post. Ironically it was Ricky Day that broke Aireys 11 year old 2 lap record of 38.2 seconds when he did a flat 38 seconds. One of the worst kept secrets was that Airey allegedly ran a high Nitro dose in the ESO the night he broke the record. John Langfield and Airey joked about the use of nitromethane in front of a lot of people including Jonesy, Cec Platt and I at a post Bathurst Long Track piss up in the early 90's. While Airey didn't actually admit that the record was done on nitro, Langy outed him pretty thoroughly and they both laughed about it, Airey not taking to oppportunity to deny.

The use of the hybrid McGee/Hilborn fuel injection gives a hint to the fuel used. Those early mechanical fuel injection setups were developed almost specifically for drag racing where throttle control isn't a priority, it's either full on or nothing. If it was a great idea, other riders would have used it. While the standard Amal or Bing speedway carb can handle nitro doses up to about 50% or maybe even less, the fuel injections force fed mechanical pump allowed for huge top fueler type doses of 90%+. The fact that the record lasted well into the 4 valve era-11 years in fact has no equivalent in motorsport.

I'm in no way denigrating Jim Airey's amazing talent and his domination of the Sydney Showground in the pre Billy Sanders era, I'm merely questioning that particular ride for that particular record on that particular night. Airey wasn't the first to allegedly use Nitro and he wasn't the last. I've also heard of another NSW based racer using the even more volatile and dangerous Hydrazine on more than a couple of occasions. While there might be a bit of "fuel fudging" today, the checks and balances are far more stringent at the top level, making it far more difficult to get away with it.

Tricky Ricky certainly knew the fast way around the old Showground, if he won the start he could beat anyone. Ricky is probably the most unasuming Speedway rider I've ever met and that was his downfall on other tracks, he lacked that little bit of mongrel that every leading rider has.
Now there's a fact I never knew, Barry VanPraag was a member of my old club Central, he's yet another rider who's career was sadly cut short at the Showground, the very next meeting after GC's fatal crash Barry ended up in a wheelchair.

The first time I med Barry Van Praag was at a Kembla Grange meeting in the early 70's when I was there spannering for my mate the late Sam Wilde at his first speedway meeting and Barry was pitted next to us. He stood out at the time because of his famous name and because he was riding a Triumph twin in a JAP frame, a very odd combo for speedway. A few years after his Showground accident Barry's carers had become a bit thin on the ground so Sam started to take Barry to the speedway and motocross races, shopping, the pub and just about everywhere,  becoming almost his fulltime carer. Unfortunately they had a falling out many years later and Barry died not long after. I got to know Barry reasonably well and once you got past the initial grumpiness caused by the frustration that being a quadraplegic must bring he was a genuinely nice bloke. I used to get a laugh out of him by telling him that I could well have been his cousin if history had taken a different course.

In the late 30's my Aunty Grace went out with Lionel Van Praag for quite a while and eventually he wanted to marry her. Dear old Aunty told him that, yes she would marry him but only if he "stopped mucking around with motorcycles and got a proper job". Thankfully for Aussie speedway history and unluckily for my Aunty he took option B and decided to stick with motorcycles. Gracie went on to marry my Uncle Frank, a good honest carpenter, produced two Rugby playing sons and lived a happy and fullfilling life 'til she was 98. Lionel married a girl who liked motorcycles and all that went with them and the rest, as they say, is history. ;)

As for the use of Nitro, at that time every top rider was on it, pretty similar on Short Circuit.
It was the same when Crumpy turned up with the Streety, everyone wanted one, Ole was the last person to win the world title on a 2 Valver, can't recall the year, 75/76 maybe.

G'day Dave, that's his hip flask, more likely to be the drinkable version for TH but he's cut back in recent times and good on him, I couldn't keep up with him and I drink too much. Trev relied more on cubic capacity although I'm sure he would've dabbled with the chemistry kit at some stage.
I hope he don't see this because he give me a bollocking.
Buckett, mum's the word.
