Mk 8 in pre 75?
« on: July 28, 2010, 09:24:52 pm »
Is it ok to run a Mk8 250 Pursnag in pre 75 class if you have a Mk7 swing arm and shocks so you have 4 in of rear travel and limit the front travel to 7 inches -- but otherwise leave the bike as is?

Modifying suspension to 4 & 7 inch travel & running Mk 7 rear shock position would most probably make the bike acceptable for pre 75 in the VCM series.
It has been done in the past, VCM would prefer you turn up with a Mk 7 or earlier.
Running the bike at the titles would be another story.

You havn`t got a problem, l have been asked to do just that, their are lots of fellows that l can name that have and raced mk8 converted to mk7, and as fare as the nationals you will have know problems. Mk7 and Mk8 frame are the same. the best thing about the mk8 is that you have left or right gear change, clutch side cover is a little different and that is not a performance part. so it is ok. Yes l am the owner of this MK8 you are talking about, and l am not telling you this as a selling pitch. That Is your discission.

Gippslander, the fact remains that a Mk 8 Pursang is a designated 75 model,
changing the bike to Mk 7 spec and competing in pre 75 will always leave you open to protest which you will loose.
The differences from Mk 7 to Mk 8 - Mk 8 has 50 mm longer forks with 8 inches of travel, front & rear, Rear hub also changed to universal style that can run brake backing plate on either side allowing for lh or rh shift whichever you prefer.
Brace on swingarm, footpegs fold at different angle, another give away LH engine case has no lip and clutch cover is changed, left hand shift which helps most.
Hard to hide all the changes as the trained eye will always pick a modified bike.
Many have run modified Mk 8's in the VCM series over the years but always put up with the snide remarks.
Please make an informed decision before buying.
