i have anodized hubs for customers in the past, some guys wanted gold anodiziing (maybe for the Talon look?) which turned out to be a bronze color rather than gold-due to the alloy used i was told. Others done in black have turned out ok. i used Collins Anodic Treatment in Blackburn, Melbourne.

Cast can be done but it doesnt turn out very good. I would go for painting. You will get a much nicer even red finish if you paint.
VHT do a red annodizing paint that imitates red annodizing.

What happens if you Machine the hub before you anodize it?

I think you would struggle to machine a brake drum type hub good enough without compromising the strength, plus you are talking old metal..not fresh, non corroided better type alloy's that we have now....geez, that was a mouthfull.

I take it that the 77 KTM hubs have iron liners for the drum ...
Anodise the hub with that in it, and you will have nothing left ! The anodizers would probably not even accept it unless it is removed.
We anodize a great deal of alloy castings. Yes, the finish is crap compared to painting. But then thats what our customer wants
Far better to two pack it or have it powder coated.

I just had my 86 hubs powdercoated. They came up great.

There's a guy in Brisbane that does a paint job on hubs similar to anodising.
The hub is polished first then a 2 pac clear/tinted laquer is painted on, looks great and there are more colour options than anodising.
Matt's metal polishing in Albion.
