Thats bad luck geoff we smashed our ute and front looked a little worse than that was 7k damage!

It made its last hop from the high beam headlights of an on coming car and it took me by complete surprise with not much chance to scrub off much speed, so it was a fair wallop. I was surprised that the airbags didn’t go off which has me wondering what sort of hit will actually set them off?

If it wasn’t for bad luck I wouldn’t have any luck at all.

Maybe Geoff,  the reason your airbag didn't deploy is because the lower part of your bumper sets it off say you hit a car or wall the whole front caves in not the bonnet the trigger for it is low in the front bumper so it needs to come inwards to work I will show you a pic of my ute I wasn't driving it was my dad but the bumper pushed outwards so it didn't trigger.

One thing a lot of drivers aren't aware of is on most modern cars the "dash" computer stores the parameters that set off the airbag including impact speed, g force, and brake application...the cops can download and use this in investigations /prosecutions

Not 100% correct. Various sensors control the SRS system, the main one being the G force sensor. Hit a big enough roo at the right speed and an air bag will most definitely deploy. In the case of downloadable data,  essential services can request the data but it is very hard to obtain given the in-house  IP regs that most manufactures have covering the system. The main thing to remember is that if you are in a car that is involved in accident where the airbags deploy and you walk away unscathed, you are a very lucky person indeed.
