VG 414 restoration
« on: June 02, 2010, 05:49:30 am »
After a two year delay, I have decided to renew my VG 414 project.  I have reinstalled the motor, hooked up the electrics, relaced and trued
both wheels and will get tires mounted this week.  As you know the 414 motor never came in the VG 250 frame, so the pipe will have to be fabricated,
as well as the head stay (see pic)  Will also have to figure out what shocks to use and the footpeg mounts might have to be altered, as the seating to shifter,
brake pedal relationship feels wrong.  I want to have it ready to race by Sept.  Stay tuned.

Very nice Jared. Is that the 250 VG that you were doing or another frame all-together? I'd love to put one in a H7 frame..... ;)

It was the VG 250 that I was going restore back to original, but thought what the heck, lets make it a racer instead of a hanger queen!

Did the VG 250 have the 'different' front braking system or the conventional front hub (what appears to be on that bike)?

The VG 250 had the conventional front hub (VR/VB/VE) with a front pull brake lever.  The VG 414 had the different larger front hub, which was almost two
lbs heavier!

That would be the asymmetrical monster. Obviously introduced to improve braking power pre-disc and in competition against the TLS of the time. I didn't know it came with a 1 kg weight penalty  ::). It would be interesting to try and experience any braking performance improvements. And the increased weight effect on the suspension performance.

Hopefully I will be able to tell you in a few months if the large hub brake is any better.

That bike will be a weapon as the 250 H7 handles great. Steering feels much sharper than the VB-VF series although they handle great as well. It has just moved the H7 up to date with its peers of the time '82-84.

Jared the rear shock geometry is the same as the '81 Maico 250/490. I purchased piggy back YSS shocks for my H7 and when I sent in all the measurements they just supplied me a pair of shock set up for a Maico. Looks like Montesa may have looked around for the best set up they could adapt and went with it. Shhhhhhh don't tell those Maico people they may think its some form of a compliment ::). Bit the same as the reed valve block on the 250 H7 is KTM (again) Shhhhhhh

The VG250 has the large asymmetrical rear hub right?

If anyone has a VG Cappra white tank laying around (Ross??) I would love to replace the yellow VF style on my Pommy VG414 ;D.
