PE 250 Advice
« on: May 20, 2010, 08:28:57 am »
Hi all, after some advice on restoring a 1980 PE 250 T

Is the original frame a gloss black or matt black?

Same question for the hubs?

Are the fork seal, wheel bearings and headstem bearings you see on ebay by the 100's any good?

Thanks in advance.

Cheers Kipo

frame - a thin low quality gloss, but not ultra ultra glossy (done to a price)
hubs - satin/low gloss (i have NOS hubs)
seals and bearings are fine but watch out for bearings from Pyramid parts. They have been known to freaquently supply wrong sizes to people. SKF bearings have the best seals if you want really good wheel bearings.

By the way i didnt mention that i have got some NOS frame parts like side stands and brackets and foot peg brackets and can see the paint on them. The original stuff was really thin and probably just over a primer or maybe even bare metal, so it was never deep and glossy but was still glossy. You can see how they gave the frames a quick squirt and thats it. Its usally acceptable to use 2pack or powdercoat (although i dont like powder coat) on the frames but you really want to try and get the hubs fairly right though aswell as heaps of other stuff you will find challenging to find.

Most PE frames I have worked with had a satin sheen rather than a gloss. Might be because they are old!
But yeah, shiny NOS parts have a thin coat of what looks like baked enamel, sans primer.

Are you going after a museum restoration or just make it look good?

Had an enquiry today about a PE 250 T
Would anyone know if the RM 250 T pipe & muffler would fit?
Is the 80 model PE similar to the 80 RM or are they the same as the earlier 78 RM?

I have a RM250 T pipe that will be going on a PE250. The basic pipe dimensions are all the same till you get back where the muffler goes. There is a few different little bends in that are because the 2 use different mufflers. You have sold a GMC RM 250 T pipe to a a guy in UK with a PE250 and from memory it basically went on find and he used his own muffler. Basically if this guys wants a pipe that will go on withno mods then the pipe needs to be purpose built for the bike and the muffler used, BUT the RM pipe will go on but may requre a few mods or changing the last 200mm or so of the tail pipe.

Basically RM250 79/80 frames are dimensionally the same as 80-82 PE250. The major differences are the RM doesnt have the rear frame loop and the left center down tube is a bit different on the PE to provide and area for the battery to go, but other than that the frames can be considered the same.

And if you want your RM pipe to fit the PE 100% perfectly, then you just need to get hold of a 80-82 PE 250 pipe and copy the last 200mm or so and add that to your existing RM design.

Hi Luke, thanks for your help. I'm going for a 'look good' want to be able to use it without stressing if it gets a bit of dirt on it. I've salvaged the tank and front guard, they came up ok but side covers, rear guard and headlight plastic need to be replaced. I've got a price from a mob in the UK for these bits. Do you want to sell your stand? Mines knackered.

Thanks Leith, I thought you might know.
Unfortunately slipping a stock pipe into my jig to modify the stinger doesn’t work as my jigs are built around my pipes.
I will need to source a bike to do this properly.
I think I recall that UK guy had to change the mounting bracket position too.

Yeah i think he had to change the bracket. I have bought a RM250T pipe and it had been fitted to a 1980 PE already and yeah, somome already had shifted the top front mount. So has anyone in the Broadford area got a PE250/400 to lend Geoff?

And frosty, make sure you leave him a tank on the bike aswell so he can sit it on the frame to make sure the pipe wont hit the tank.
