One of the Klub Kevlar 'good ol boys' is building something a little different for next years Lake Gairdner Speed Trials.
He's going to attempt to break the 500cc single cylinder world record with this homebuilt framed Weslake. Jonesy supplied and rebuilt the Otto Lattenheimer built engine that'll run 90% nitro. Our welding instructor will be shocked and horrified to find that the frame's made from good old mild steel.
There's more than just old dirt bikes keeping us amused these days.

Set a good time to start with and whatever you do (especialy with that mild steel frame) get a big drum of 'Salt Off" from the US.

As Lozza says make sure you get the Salt Off, and while your shipping stuff from the States how about yourself get a great big can of 'Whoop Ass' as well. It will always comes in handy.

And you reckon I don't know how to let things go…  Keep stirring the pot, you never know what you will happen next.

Firko, you'll be able to use the leftovers of the pipe to make the exhaust....waste not ...want not....true legends in the making.....I know a bloke up here who might be able to help you's out ....I'll get his number if you like?......you might even learn something....you know, old dog's....new tricks.

Don't Be silly Davey, those tube would be too large for the exhaust.   
Mild steel should be fine but I hope you intend to triangulate the frame a bit more?
Are the tubes 1.5mm thick or thicker, don't have to answer if thats a trade secret.
I'm thinking that the long straight tubes would flex a bit under power.
From what I have heard, weight isn't a problem for speed trials, in fact it's quite the opposite.
I have heard that some guys fill the frame tubes with lead as they need the weight for traction at high speed.
Light weight is good for acceleration but at high speed it's easy for them to get wheelspin.

Supposedly you need to be light enough to have adequate acceleration to get to top speed before the timing light, but heavy enough to minimise wheelspin on the salt. Heavier is actually better for top speed provided you have the power and traction to accelerate quickly enough.

I'd take some 'chickens' and 'eggs' just to be sure! 

Sounds like a fun challenge, but if it all goes wrong I am sure there will be plenty of beer on site…

Hold on boyos, I'm not the crazy salt racer here....it's a mate of ours project but we'll be there with it.

Yeah Geoff, you've got it right re saving weight not being a factor in salt racing. The frame will indeed have more triangulation and there'll be mounting plates for lead ballast. Mild steel is more than ample for a salt racer or any other form of racer if it's built right. When I last visited Lake Gairdner I was amazed at the amount of lead weight the Hayabusa boys strap to their swingarms to prevent high end traction loss.
