Ohlins paint
« on: May 09, 2010, 03:07:52 pm »
Has anyone found a good match for the Ohlins bronze/brown shock paint? I bought a few cans of what is ment to be colour matched paint from Husqvarna parts but i am quite disapointed  :( with the colour as it is too light and does not look right compared to the original colour. I tryed 2 cans, both bought from Husqvarrna-parts, one was 'made for ohlins USA by custom pak' and the other one 'made for husky products by custom pak' I tryed both side by side and could see a slight difference in the 2 but both were not dark enough like the original colour and are too light brown.

i had a look around and a few guys in France have used this colour Motip -51711 BMW - réf 281 - SIENAROT P. 2C and i found that colour in the Spies Hecker book and the colour is closer but its a bit too dark so still not close enough.

I have a feeling its going to be a 60's-80's car colour, you know something like on a old Chev or a Cortina or something like that, but i dont have any colour books that old and i only have colours used on 92-96 cars.

The thing is that i had seen shocks that guys have painted on the net and i could see the colour they used was just too light and not right but i was hoping that the paint they used was different to what i got or it was just like that because of the computer screen but when i tryed out painting one mount it turned out the same colour as what i'd seen on the computer photos. I tryed different colour primers but that made no difference.

You have to love Ohlins.
Most people will not pay the money for them and just say all shocks are the same.
I know I use to say it myself, right up till I installed a pair on my Maico.
What a difference they made to cornering.

Peter, it's the older stuff, steel bodies and remote reservoirs that were painted the bronzy brown colour

Oh ok i wasn`t aware of that, any reason you can`t take a sample to get color matched and then put into pressure packs.??

Yeah, I think that might be the best way, the paint shop I use have a hand held scanner that can do close matches, but it only seems to work on flat surfaces. Worked well from 83 CR and RM -B guards when I needed frame and tank paint. I will take an old shock and see if it works. You get a printout of the formula if it does. Otherwise it will have to be an 'eye match'.

No theres no reason you cant do that. As a last resort i would send an original shock to Adelaide to see of they can match it and i will get a tin of it to put in a spray gun. But if anyones already had it matched and has found a good colour that would save a lot of work. I just like the look of the gold reservoir against the bronze/brown so i want it to look right.

I found a Subaru colour (Shanghai something) from Super Cheap Auto in the small Duplicolor spray cans to be the closest match. Maybe slightly darker than original.  I am surprised they would allow a spray can to be shipped from the US.  Air freight of spray cans is a no no I thought.
