I thought a bit rough for the price, considering restored ones are going for $3500-$4500. I can easily see another $1000 or more being spent on this to bring it up to top condition.

Could be.There has been a couple of late that have sold on Ebay in the high $3/4k bracket. They were very nice restos aswell with all the work done. Even a quick tidy up will cost. It's all those little parts that add up. Then you look back at what you originally outlayed and see your $3k KX has turned into a $5/6k resto. It depends on what sought of condition you want the bike in.
Paid $500 for my KX 500, yes the motor is in pieces but I will come out way ahead in the $$$ department when the resto is done. Just picked up a very nicely restored YZ400E. It's not a KX 500 but then again I only paid $3K. Runs super smooth and tight. Plan to have it at Conondale, can't wait. :)

Do I know you? I don't think so! "My budget" well we aren't all born with silver spoons are we now! Any person who starts a rebuild without a plan or budget to work to is in a world of trouble. Currently restoring a PE400 which will probably finish up owing me $3500/4k when done. Will I get my money back, absolutely. ;) I just think paying $3k is an expensive place to start for a bike that needs work.

Without wanting to labour the point, it doesn't look like it would need a lot of work to get on and race and have some fun and stuff. You know. Old bikes, old dirt, old fun...... :P

Fark it. I might buy it just to prove a point!

The only thing stopping me at this point in time is fear of a 4'6" blonde thing who can de-calcify my entire spinal system with one lashing of her tounge if another bike gets wheeled into the shed. Hmmmm. :-\

that is not a good option there was 28 pairs of shoes in her wardrobe some still with the tags on.she who must be obeyed tossed nearly the lot to st vinnies and went out and bought new ones.wont do that again.same with clothes i keep right away from that subject.
