1978 RM250C Crank Parts
« on: April 11, 2010, 10:23:10 pm »
Some time back some Forumites (BigK from memory) helped out with some part number "X" references against other brand/make components for a PE250T, SeaDoo for a rod as an example.

Time has come to check in on the same process for a 1978 PE/RM-250. I have checked the following part numbers for the 78 PE & RM and they are listed as being the same with some commanality with the 79/80 250's, although most not avaliable from Suzuki.
Whilst i could get them genuine from USA and probably from the usual pay more than they are worth search services, if i can get them as an aftermarket part through some of the aussie importers i'd be happier.
Con-Rod - 12161-41103
Main Pin - 12211-41101
Small Bearing - 09263-18011
Big Bearing - 09263-24026
Thrust Washer - 09160-24015

The parts system tells me that;
- The small end bearing is shared from the 1978 PE & RM right through to the 1980 PE & RM
- The thrust washer is shared from the 1978 PE & RM right through to the 1980 PE. The RM N/T is different.
- The crank pin is shared from the 1978 PE & RM right through to the 1980 PE. The RM N/T is different.
- The main bearing is common to the 1978 PE & RM but different to the RM N/T & the PE N/T
- The conrod is common to the the 1978 PE & RM but different to the RM N/T & the PE N/T

If anyone has a X-reference to a Hot-Rod, Pro-X it would be appreciated.

"The conrod is common to the the 1978 PE & RM but different to the RM N/T & the PE N/T"

that can't be right! The PE250N shared the same rod as the PE B and C.
Still available from Suzuki, or from Ron Anchack.

79 PE rod is different to 80-82

79 PE250          - ROD - 12161-41101
80/81/82 PE250 - ROD - 12161-40300
79/80 RM250     -ROD -  12161-40300

you go to remember the PE was one year behind the RM. 79 PE still had the old rod and only got the 79 RM rod in 1980
Wanted - 1978 TS185 frame or frame&motor. Frame # TS1852-24007 up to TS1852-39022

Give these guy's a bell, or send details of your old rod for them to match one up to.

Luke,
My listing has the following (with supercessions);
1977 RM250B - 12161-41103
1977 PE250B - 12161-41103
1978 RM250C - 12161-41103
1978 PE250C - 12161-41103
1979 RM250N - 12161-40300
1979 PE250N - 12161-40300
1980 RM250T - 12161-40300
1980 PE250T - 12161-40300
1981 RM250X - 12161-14200
1981 PE250X - 12161-40300
1982 RM250Z - 12161-41103
1982 PE250Z - (N/A)

12161-14300 ss to 12161-41102 ss to 12161-41103
12161-41100  ss to 12161-41101  ss to 12161-41102  ss to 12161-41103

I deal with BBI a lot, but what helps is if there has been expierence from others where a rod from another machine can be used.
eg: The rod from a 800cc SkiDoo snowmobile fits a PE250 N/T. If you were to supply the PE250 N/T dimensions to BBI they wouldn't come back with a match as you have to use other parts to complete the job.

I can get a genuine rod, but at a significantly higher cost than a HotRod or ProX rod etc.

Can someone confirm the numbers above?
I have these numbers from my Suzuki microfiche so if they are correct then i would suggest that anchakandsons website is incorrectly listing the rod for the PE250N, the rest of the model listing looks good however.

I also note on the anchakandsons website that if you want a PE400 rod, then use a SeaDoo rod with 2 thrust washers per side. I don't know if i would be happy placing 2 thrust washers together. They also note that the crank pin is NG but offer no solution as what to use. When last i chased 400 parts the pin was as rare to get as the rod.

1982 PE250Z - (N/A)

Its the same as the T/X (12161-40300)

Im not sure where you have found out that the PE250 N rod is 12161-40300 ? I checked alpha-sports and it is listed as a 12161-41101 and superceeds to 12161-41103. I have always seen lots of PE250 N con rod kits on ebay but i have never bought them for my PE250T knowing that the rod is different.

My first suggestion would be to fax the rod dimensions to BBI. There is another company with a huge list of rod dimensions but i can not think of who or where they are. I have a vague feeling Lozza knows them?

There has been discussion about the PE400 rod kit on the PE Forum but i cant remember what the story was with the big end pin.

Bahnsy.     How many PE 400 B/E pins do you want, ( not letting that one out of the bag )   It's a case of doing a little bit of research and cross referencing that's what yield results  ;)
As I said before arm youself with dimensions and cross check for a match.........this could take hours - days or months ( in my case longer - but ended up being a life saver )

The seadoo rod in my Pe 400 is still going strong with 2 thrust washers , last outing was a 4 hour enduro ;)

Pins i have nailed, BBI gets me over the line for the 250 & the 400.
Just a little machining to reduce the overall length of the pin.

Hi Guys,

the PE250 rod # 12161-41103 is used in the PE250B,C,N and the RM250A,B,C,C2 motors. 12161-40300 is the PE250T,X and RM250T,X rod.

I am in the process of updating/changing the PE400 rod kit. I have found a new thrust washer to use, we will not have to "stack" 2 washers together. I am going to order the sample washers today and when I get them I will try them in a crank assembly. I am also going to supply the PE400 rod kit as a "complete" kit. What I mean is the Seadoo crank pin isn't used, we use the OEM PE400 pin. I am going to take out all of the unused items in the HotRods package and put together what is needed to do a PE400 crank. I should have done this from the start. Thanks, Ron Anchak
