PE 250 ignitions

Can somone please tell me will an ignition off a PE 250N stator, magneto and cdi work on a PE 250 T or X thanks in anticipation Bill  :)

Bill, I'm pretty sure the coils on an " N "   base plate are in the wrong position and you would need to re-drill base plate to suit T/X pattern .

I don't know for sure but with the stator I think you need to redrill holes 90 degrees from the original ones to suit a t/x I think you can use the stator but I am not sure on the cdi Leith or Luke would know for sure the cdi's of pe250b,c and n are the same part number but t is different to them in part number.

Hi Bill no they are not the same as the plates are 90 out, 175t stator & flywheel fit on the 250 as I had that on my motor for sometime & 175 cdi makes the 250 rev as well.

The B/C/N 250's shared the 175 stator and flywheel. (yes, ALL the 175's). Regardless of what anybody says, that stator and flywheel will fit every PE.

the T/X/Z PE250 and PE400 had the 33% larger (mass) flywheel (which is only 100 grams heavier than the earlier ones) and widened stator to suit. It was also rotated 90 degrees. No idea why. Perhaps just easier to access the slots during assembly,
The coils are all 'new'. Visually however, very little difference. For some reason, this larger flywheel had a history of letting go of its magnets, so it is becoming a bugger to find a good one! (I have a 250X and a 400T on the floor - both missing their flywheels)
 
Flywheel PE 175 N    1094 gramms  107 mm OD markings: FP 5153 and  4192
Flywheel PE 175 T    1094 gramms  107 mm OD markings: FP 5153 and  4192
Flywheel PE 250 T    1192 gramms  119 mm OD markings: FP 4172 and  4192
Flywheel PE 400 T    1192 gramms  119 mm OD markings: FP 4166 and  4192
 
So - MANY people did the simple trick of using the 'old' lighter/smaller flywheel and stator.
It has been said that you have to rotate the old one 90 degrees and drill new mounting holes.
However I know of a 400 running just fine with a 175 flywheel and stator dropped straight in.

Hi I have a pe 250 1980 that I am having trouble with. I have had the stator rewound. The motor kicks back and has even run backwards. Has anyone experienced and if so how can it be fixed? Thanks Dave

timing out? It shouldn't be to hard a fix you can get a guage that screws in the plughole to set you tdc if it had another stator from an earlier bike it may need the new holes but best thing would be check p/number on the stator to confirm if it is a 250t stator then check timing to make sure that part is right.

Ludo, go over Lukes information above. If its running backwards thats a good sign that you have the smaller 77-79 stator and flywheel fitted and the timing incorrect. I know someone else that had the same problems as you with a 250 running backwards then he found out he had a 79 stator on a 80 model bike. Drill 2 slots 90 degs to whats in the plate now and problem should be fixed. But check the info above first to just work out what you have first as theres no need to uneccessarily make new slots. If you havent got a factory onwers/workshop manual than please download a free copy from the link in Lukes post. You will actually see the positioning on the stator plate in the manual. If when you mount yours the coils dont look in the same position as the photo in the manual then that means you have an eariler stator. Basically it can only go on one way but which can either be correct or with the coils in the oposite position. it all becomes pretty obvious when you stit down and look at what you got and what the manual shows.

done it, use it, has 500km so far on it  only i have the 250x cdi on my 250x only as thats what i had on hand and yes you will need to drill holes opposite the ones allready there or it will run backwards or try to and luke is right about the flywheel mass but mine still lugs thru water and climbs hills with ease............such a cool bike to ride ,happy to supply any more info -. ;D
