Typical Honda, soon as you get them home they fall to pieces ;D.

Sorry, it looks great. Should be a great and unique resto when you finish 8).

No Col, Bob's going to do a co production resto with his son. They're possibly changing to an Elsinore tank so I've put my hand up for the Lyta Goldy tank. The decisions yet to be made.

I don't know how he does it but Klub Kevlars Las Vegas operative Bob Neilson has unearthed another gem barnfind.
Below is the Trackmaster Harley Bob bought with the proceeds from the Hindall sale. The engine's an early Sportster with a stroker crank and shitloads of unobtainium. Cool or what? Bobs got some seriously interesting machines in his 20 bike collection.

Wow old bobs got a nose for finding stuff, and the querky, looks like a tracy glass kit thats using a TRackstyle tank molded to a champion rear like the triumph ones tyhat were getting around.

Doubt its trackmaster though, the swing arm has been heavily modded and one off where it comes into the frame ( flat bar not tubed).  Im guessing a normal harley doenst use a rear loop either ? but neither did Ray or neil so its a custom frame or a splice in.  Suss out the lack of gusset area not normal sonic/track, more like a street bike or chopper framer conversion/maker.

ealry Snow flake wheels........ makes it look more like the old black/gold ducati road bike, look heaps sexy with some nice wide Borrani spoked set.    Cant say i like the anodised stuff  - eeeek  ....  even if it was just one colour anodised would look heaps tougher.

still be a interesting thing to get around on.  I think its got heaps of potential if he gets retro on it,  spoke wheels for sure though

Id love to get something like that and shove some of them loooooog forks in it, be a cool Retro chopper.

Did he ever finish that other blue/white one peice glass chopper thing he had before ( truimph? )or did he return it to track trim?

Id be inclined

Freaky....Being the wheeler dealer Bob is, he's already passed the Harley on to Brian Deitz . Brian's a mega collector who owns the hanger next to Jay Leno at Santa Monica airport and has a very cool collection of dirt track and road racers plus some unique motocrossers. Brians currently hounding me to sell him my Boyd and Stellings TM and to talk Jonesy into selling him his Hagon TT500 monocoque mx'er.

Bob had a post on the VFT site asking if anyone knew of the bikes history. A previous owner got in touch with him and  informed him that the frame's a Trackmaster that's been extended 8" to take the Harley Sportster engine. The engines a stroker hot rod engine with lots of go fast goodies. It started life as a street bike but has been recently used for vintage dirt track. The original owner ran the bike at the Bonneville speed trials about 25 years ago fitted with a blower and Hilborn injection but Bob doesn't know how fast it went. Bob said that Brian wants to put it on the street which we all agreed is where it belongs. Whatever, it's a very cool bike.
Bobs got the Sonic/Tracy old school chopper on the street and that's the way its staying. He did toy with the idea of building it as a dirt bike but decided to keep it as it is.

Nice... that hard tail chopper is the ducks guts in retro porn i reakon.  8)

The HD still looks like a splice into me, there too much going on there for it too be early iron, but if they have added the rear loop for glass and the front end is a cut in from the HD then would explain a bit , and as a salt flat runner they make some odd shit up.

YEah id have moved that HD on too it was a lot of work and in no man's land, you would need to make it into something, it was lost in the state it was.

thans for the update.

thanks

We're hijacking Sudmans thread here, my apologies mate, but I'll try and steer it back on course directly. For want of somewhere else to place this info about Bobs Sportster here's a little blog page from Sideburn Magazines website. To me the bike appears to be a stretched Trackmaster (8''as the original owner has indicated) but it's pretty obvious it's been built for something other than dirt track even though it'd probably work OK on a longer mile style track. The bikes supposed salt racing heritage is interesting but I reckon it's not even set up correctly for salt racing. Without the benefit of a closer photo, I wouldn't be surprised if that wasn't a Boyd and Stellings aluminium swingarm. To me it's a very cool street tracker and I think the Tracy style bodywork and Rokon wheels seperate it from the 'everyday' Harley street tracker. Bob's done a swap deal with Brian Deitz for something "very rare and special" that he'll be sending me photos and infor on next week. http://sideburnmag.blogspot.com/2010/05/bobs-sporty.html

C&J Prototype frame for the Honda XL 250/350 engines.
Please read the email from Denis Curtis, of Curtis Frames in Canada.

Hello Richard,
The reason I know it's a C&J is that early in '73 when the XL350 first came out I was approached by Clarke Simpkins Honda (Clarke Simpkins was the distributor of Honda products for British Columbia and Alberta at that time) Race director, who asked me to build an enduro frame and a motocross frame for the big single. What you see on my Curtis Racing website was the first enduro version, what you don't see is the later version of Enduro/MX/Desert Racer.
During the time I was building the bikes another racer friend shows up at my shop with a frame kit from California made by C&J. I have a picture of it somewhere. He had been road racing at Ontario motor Speedway in L.A. (now defunct) and had seen this C&J prototype in the paddock, being shown to several people.
He noticed, as did I, that the rear of the engine was held in a cradle which was mounted to the swing arm pivot and to the frame. The originator of that style of frame was Doug Schwerma of Champion Racing Frames, and he used that principle on all his Dirt Track racers.
One of the founders of C&J was a prevoius employee of Champion so there is the link. C&J went on to change the design of their frames.
I knew Doug Schwerma through Yamaha Motor Canada and we consulted on several joint projects particularly around Dirt Trackers. I never used that rear engine cradle idea on any of my frames, and that is how I know what frame you have!

So, I now have confirmation that backs up my original thoughts of this being a C&J frame.

$2000.00 plus shipping. Where eles will you find a C&J prototype frame?

Thanks Mark,

Richard

Some days you just get lucky :), I got an email the other day from the guy in the state that I purchased my C & J rolling frame off telling me he had found the long lost motor from this bike :o The 1st question I asked was how much is this motor going to cost me, the reply came back " cost of freight " ;D now that has to put a smile on your face.

Gearbox is missing but I have the important bit with all the correct numbers on it.

About 6 weeks, shipping it with Kiwi freight again, I am at the stage now that the frame needs some colour on it but do I paint as done in the day or do I get it powder coated?

Cheers
Tony
