One of my 414's (the one that was said to have came from montesa factory for a works rider in uk)has no shims in gearbox or on either side of crank works great.

Either the engine builder was very lucky or very dumb!

The engine was reworked by a engineer(i have not had engine apart but have known this guy for years he had his first mont of me 15 years ago and has raced this bike with the modified engine and showed me the parts he took out)case's were split and machined(now requires no middle gasket to seal)new parts made and fitted to do away with shims, next time i see him i will ask for more in depth details.this bike has also got needle roller bearings in swingarm instead of bronze bushes. He's not dumb or lucky just a very clever guy.

Bronze bushes are better than needle rollers in a swingarm but sounds like the guy knows what hes doing.

I promise i will put some photo's on when i can(computors and me do not get on)how's this just been talking to sandy and the 414vf i have is in fact a 414vg if the engine/frame no's on a certain website are correct my engine/frame number is 66mo2656 and it does have the asometric front wheel(this is one i am rebuilding after sitting in my shed for years)purchased it many years ago always learning new things even after 35plus years of owning/riding monts,as for needle bearings he made complete new set up so no bronze bushes or steel inners.Have got another set he made as spare so will put photo's of them on as well.Seem's to me that more 414vg's came to UK than 414vf's.The 414vg white tank bike's(white tank one's seem to be super rare)engine/frame number is 66mo2765.The special i have been talking about ie no shims has engine number 66mo2695 (1981) but can not see a frame number which would fall in line with what i have been told about it being some sort of factory bike? by the guy who rode for montesa over here(he said it looks like the one he rode and there were not two of them made).

Needle rollers in the swingarm, no centre gasket, no transmission shaft shims.  Why? ???

I think because he could/did and did not have to pay someone to do it personaly i would not go to all that trouble but then again i am not that clever and if this guy thought he could reduce his lap time by half a second by doing stuff he would like he has put new cylinder liner/piston and ported/polished which did not need doing but he just did why? why do people do all sorts of stuff it does give every one something to talk/moan about though.
