« on: February 21, 2010, 06:01:34 pm »
my pe 175 started making a popping noise and blowing smoke slowly got worse would start fine when it was warm but when it was cold wouldnt start, replaced spark plug started first kick, revs fine down low but when powerband comes on it starts dying like its flooded and blows smoke and is blowing oil out of exhaust which it hasnt done before still has good compression could this be the crank case seal? or maybe a carby problem? also the smoke smells different from normal 2 stroke smoke.cheers and thanx in advance gary

Smoke smelling different is a dead giveaway of blown seal on the gearbox side, have you checked how the level is?

Does sound like you have done a seal if I were you I would get the motor rebuilt completly rather than just replace the seal. :)

Requires cases to be split anyway to replace seal.

I have heard of guys not splitting the cases to put them in to fix it on the cheap they broke the old one and pulled it out and pushed the new one in but I would do the lot for peice of mind and it will be right for another 30 years. :)

the right hand side seal is fitted from the inside, so the crankshaft has to be removed.

also can someone tell me were i would find the timing marks on the engine case to line up with the marks on the flywheel? ive explained my problem to a couple of mechanics and they seem to think the problem may be electrical either timing or cdi box,as the plug isnt getting oily and it has the popping noise like its firing at the wrong time.thanx cheers gary

see the owners manual
http://cid-407d7ef0965d3991.skydrive.live.com/browse.aspx/Pure%20Enduro

you put your stator on with two screws. They are dead in the centre of the slot.
DONE.

It is becoming common with 30+ yr old stators that the coils are crapping out.
Take that to be rewound. CDI is unlikely to be a problem

But from your description of the problem,  I would be doing the seals.

Just a thought - have you recently changed to ethanol-mixed fuel?
Ethanol destroys the seals in old bikes - wrong kind of rubber/plastics.

That sounds good Gary it is what I would do the gt80 motor is getting completly rebuilt now and then you know it will be right for another 30 years except it won't be ridden but just for peace of mind knowing it is right I will have to rebuild three 400 motors soon but I might have a go at them myself except for the performance mods I will get some one else to take care of those. :)
