YZ490 and colour of YZ motors
« on: November 30, 2007, 10:05:55 pm »
What year was the last YZ490 made in? What was the reason Yamaha stopped making them?
Last is I am restoring an 1984 YZ125L is the engine colour Matt, semi gloss or gloss black?
Thanks to all that reply.

My 125L's engine is sprayed in cheap, crappy Dulux semi-gloss black. It isn't a perfect match, but perfectly acceptable for a race bike - definitely much better than gloss or matt would be.

The last YZ490 was 89 or early 1990s??? The WR500 came out in 1993 or 94, and there had been a year or two gap between it and the last YZ490.

They stopped making the 490 because they were hopelessly outdated and sales figures were in the single digits.

This post would be a lot easier if I'd had less beers. I reserve the right to have ballsed it up badly.

Hi Gibbo.  I have 2 x '84 L's and agree with Nathan.  Stay away from Gloss or Matt.
Models,  see this one for a start  http://craigmac215.tripod.com/yzmodels.htm

That "cheap, crappy Dulux semi-gloss black" you guys are talking about, is that high temp stuff? I've got to paint a motor soon, just wondering how heat resistant it needs to be....

cheers.

The dulux stuff isn't heat resistant, use the brake caliper semi-gloss black you get from super-cheap auto's

Yeah - it isn't rated as heat resistant, but neither has it shown any signs of stress. I have no qualms painting more water-cooled engines with it.

ahhh, water cooled, i guess an air cooled motor would get a fair bit hotter, so i'd best go with the heat resistant brake caliper stuff ... cheers.

VHT - brake caliper and rotor satin black.  Heat, chip and chemical resistant.  Gave up using barell paint and high high temp paint etc and just use the brake caliper paint - in satin it is excellent.
