Yeah Jerry that was the race. Anton and Ronnie came through the field and were making ground on Jack when they tangled and crashed at the end of the main straight.

on a Montessa with Frankston Club. very strong club back then, sadly no more.
Interesting that Dandenong had very few members back then. previous Grand national winners reads like a who's who's of mx.

Yes Brent was on a Montesa (with one 'S' Al). Good Lad! :)
I see our own Henry Leatham lined up beside the 'big guns' and Mr Maico (Kenny Baker) in the B grade. ;D
Trevor Brooks and Mark Hill in juniors. Gee that was a long time ago. Was telly around then?  :-\

I was watching from somewhere in the middle of the main straight.
Still often wonder how something as simple as a broken leg can turn into something so disastrous.
I seem to remember Anton being really fast, crashing and then catching up again several times until that bad crash.

They invented telly later that year for the channel 0 broadcast from Broadford

Yes Ross, I was around 100 yards behind at the time and saw the tail end of the crash, I was riding 110% head down arse up and as was struggling to hang on, form memory the crash did not look that bad, but I was proved wrong.  HL

I didn't know Anton had a broken leg, I was under the impression he got some sort of infection though a small cut. He walked up and spoke to me after the race before he went to hospital. He was limping though.

Raced with Anton from sub-juniors from what was relayed to me, he thought he just had a small break in the leg and sat in his Dads car till the end of the race to see who won, then went to Frankston hospital; (quite a drive from Christmas Hills) and went to emergency from there it gets a bit sketchy but was told either an infection or gas cangrenous(unsure if this is correct spelling) had set in the femur bone and spreading could result in death, hence the amputation.

Thanks Rosco, when we came in after the race Anton walked up limping to talk to me and said he was in a bit of pain and would go to the hospital a bit later, but he was still in good spirits though dissapointed about crashing out in second place because he was gaining on Jack. Believe me Anton and Ronnie were flying.
