Take a hard look at frame on LHS boys at rear ....look for Rm tag to mount guard - extra gusset ( because frame loop has been cut ) I think the PE x has gusset ???

Putting an Rm tank on a PE looks pox unless you have the seat to match .

All, my PE 250s 80-82 have that gusset i think your referring too.

The RS seat looks like its just an RM one with different cover. Yes RM tank will fit PE frame and the seat should too.
RS front wheel is same as PE175 T/X and also DR400T USA and possibly DR500 X too?
you can use any 80-82 PE 250/400 or 80/81 PE175 rim. They are all the same dimensionally except 81/82 has bigger spoke nipple holes and the rim material is different. You can take a PE250/400 front wheel and remove the 150mm hub and fit the 130mm PE175/DR400 hub and then you will have a RS wheel. Basically the only difference between the 150 and 130mm brakes is the spokes are longer for the 130mm hub. If you can find a complete PE175 front wheel that will save swapping hubs/spokes etc. All the full width wheels fit any of the 36mm forks. PE250/400 T/X forks are identical. 82 250/400 are dimensionally and externally the same but different inside. The 175's use the same sliders and chrome legs but i think the springs are different. You could get away with PE forks if you couldnt find the specific RS/DR forks. I think they are virtually the same anyway but There is some minor differences..... ahh yes i remember now, the RS forks are unique, the chrome legs have a thicker wall than the PE fork legs and they dont have air fork caps.

By the way the RS shocks are unique too. I dont know how you will find those. You will probably have to make do with PE ones but even those are hard to find. Ive been looking for 4 years for original PE250 shocks.

Ok i hope i havent confused you too much there.

The look of the RS appeals to me but i figure just fitting that rear guard to a PE would achieve that look for me.

according to the parts book the RS air box is the same as PE250. Wouldnt be an issue to add a bracket if its missing though.

rear fender is listed for RS only but that is only because it comes drilled for the tail light other than that its just a RM250 T fender.

All very good info, thanks gentlemen.
I was sitting here thinking about it and remembered that I got a DR400T front end with some SP bits I bought years ago. Just went and had a look and it's in excellent shape. New fork seals and a tyre is all it needs!  ;D

I think I'm onto a running but rough PE250T too. Which would be the best place to start for this project I think.
I'm not too stressed about making it totally perfect, so I'm thinking a PE with RM tank, seat, guards, lights and stickers might be ok to start with.

If they are the USA DR400 T forks and not the DR400 ST forks then they will be the right ones.

so it shuld be like this with the extra overhang under the axle

I actually got a NOS one of these hubs today.

If you have any more questions just ask because one of us here should be able to answer it. It should be a really easy bike to build.

By the way ive got some RS sales brochures somewhere too. Not 100% sure if i have 250 though.

Ah, crap. I reckon they're DR400ST forks, then.
Oh well.................. I'm pretty sure I won't get pulled up by the RS250 police for it.  :D

im pretty sure the DR - ST forks will not have enough travel and be long enough. They also wont look very good on the bike with the short length under the axle. Those sort of forks look really trail bikey or SP like  :) Theres plenty of PE250/400 forks out there that will look right. I think i might even know someone who has some.

Well there you go, theres some shocks. although look at how the springs are fitted (wrong way around)  ::) Id ask them for the part number which is stamped on the shock body to be 100% sure they are RS.

Ok, here's what I'll be starting with..............

It looks pretty average but allegedly rides well.
I might get away with the frame, front end and engine, but the swingarm and rear wheel will need to be changed.
Anyone got any PE sites I should look at for info?
I'm sure I've seen them on here before, but after a quick look, decided it was easier to ask.  :-\
