2-stroke mufflers

I've had to pull off the std PE175N muffler because it was just WAY too loud. If I pack it to quieten things down, performance suffers. Currently using an RGV250 muffler, which works well, but it's still on the upper side of socially acceptable.

So what are the recommendations? What's the scoop on a muffler that is actually QUIET, functional, yet still looks the part? Is there a favourite in the market? Or does it mean a call to GMC?

Lluke ...they used to have a welsh plug up inside the muffler. and was quite common to knock it out to create what they thought extra HP . Nup all it created was more noise 
Are you sure yours is still factory ,as they were quite Quiet

Try one of the rerpo TS/ER mufflers that Musket make, but you will have to change the mount from right to left for it to fit a PE. They look similar to the "sound-kit" mufflers they sold for RM's in the U.S to meet sound regs for riding on public land.

Normal mufflers Glass packing is around the lead out pipe so the gases should flow through the centre, if performance suffers because you pack the outside  of the mufller tube somthing is wrong inside, somthing else is stopping it comming through the centre as the packing should be no where near it and would blow out in the first 10 mins if it was the glass just absorbs the sound wave and stops it reflecting back. does the  baffle tube mate up to the end cone or is it broken off inside and short ? somthinig dont sound right in there ( parden the pun)

At worst you can build in inverted tail pipe 'intention'? but the the pipe needs to be infront of the second cone to work ( or perfoamnce suffers) but good for 10db if all else fails .

I got a DG exhausts "universal" silencer from ebay. Fits just about any thing Not too noisy and not too quiet. 'Repackable' and cost me 100 bucks.

Luke the stock PE mufflers kept things reasonabley quiet..a good muffler packed correctly it shouldn't be overly loud in any sence of the word. The TS/ER mufflers as mentioned by Cyclegod do make a very noticable difference but they are heavy. On a TS185ER if you remove the muffler it makes no difference to the power output so they do work kinda okay. I've seen some nice FMF mufflers in ebay US of late buy it now at good prices. Don't forget the PE's when new had restrictor plates and airbox lids fitted that cut noise to squeeze them through the ADR's. Most were ripped out at the dealers before delivery. If you want quiet I feel you'll pay the price performance wise to some extent...the quieter you go the more power will be lost..sad but it's seems to hold mostly true.

I'll continue searching for a quiet alternative and will also try the TS suggestion.
The existing one was WAY loud - and packing knocked 10Db off, but Doc I think that after packing, the original plug/washer thingy may have come adrift and is blocking things up. I just put the RGV one on and everything came back to life.

I'm after something better than 'reasonably good'. Perhaps some late, late model 2-stroke KTM muffler or similar might get the thing quiet without suffering. I just don't feel 'not too noisy' is valid these days. No need to upset people if I can avoid it, which prompted the question on what is available today rather than 25 years ago.

Type in NSR 250 silencer/ Villa Motor into ebay.

Failing that tis very easy to make/modify either ali/stainless, carbon fibre/stainless or if the budget streched to carbon fibre/titanium. Secret is in the hole size and hole spacing. Packing material and density has a big bearing on things to.

Hi Luke,
I have a PE that has a late model KTM muffler fitted it works great and is one of the only bikes I own that is under the noise limit of 102db The muffler was cut off about three quarters as a KTM muffler is huge.
Me old mate Gorby was the one down here that suggested it and then carried out the work.

The KTM suggestion is a good one.

If you're not too concerned about period look, what about a standard muffler from a two stroke trail/ag bike? Say for example a stock muffler from a Yamaha DT200/230? A standard muffler from a 2 stroke ag bike would probably be very quiet, but also might be a bit restrictive...

yeah it's a tough call alright Tim but then so is the threat from the government if this figure is not achieved  I reckon I'll be struggling with a couple of bikes. I'll give it a go but it's tough when a few of my bikes engine noise alone is above the new limit without taking the exhaust into account

arrow mufflers make a very nice universal alloy muffler that is available in round & oval profiles & in different inlet sizes , all you need to do is cut off the little enduro turn down off the end & you have a very retro looking high quality repackable QUIET muffler  for about $120 NZD , - not sure if you can get them in AUS but would be worth finding out

where do you get the arrow mufflers? any pics on a website anywhere. i looked everywhere and couldnt find them. i reckon you mentioned them on the old forum. im pretty sure i went to the arrow site but i could not see the universal mufflers
