Maico Rod Lengths
« on: December 19, 2009, 09:19:16 am »
Hi all, does anyone know the centre to centre rod lengths for the 250 / 440 /490 Maicos, or can point me in the right direction to find the info? Was the 440 GS rod the same length as the mx version? Did they all share a 22mm small end eye/18mm pin? Thanks a lot.

My charts only show me 1 length rod and IIRC they are the same for the 250 upwards. The length shown is 132 but I think it should be 136mm c to c as the YZ 465/490 rod is listed as 137.5 and from the one conversion I have seen that sounds about right. 22mm small end eye 18mm gudgeon and 25mm crank pin

What Lozza said for the bigguns, but I think the 250 and big bores have a different rod length. Unfortunately I haven't got a 250 rod in the shed to compare. When doing the Yamaha conversion i'm fairly sure we used a Yamaha 250J model for the 250 Maico and a Yamaha 465/490 rod for the 400/440/490. I'll stand corrected however as it's been a long trime since I've done the conversion and may have my models wrong (but I think I'm right!)

Thanks to both Lozza and Mark for your time and replies. I have absolutely ZERO knowledge of Maico's, barring of course, being able to remember when guys with distinctly thinner than average wallets used to be able to afford them!

From your answers and the little bit of info that I already have, it looks like the 250 and big bores were different in length and width. So, the 250 is 132mm x 17mm wide, and the larger bikes (Im going to assume that the 490 is a bored 440??!!), 136mm long x 16.5 wide.

The only reason Im looking into this is as a possible solution to the large number of otherwise uneconomic to repair Alpha/Greeves cranks that I have, the Maico 440 rod (16.5mm wide x 25mm crankpin x 22:18 small end) and Suzuki RM/PE/TS piston route being a viable solution for one or more of them......

Thanks
