Postage Issues From The U.S.
« on: December 16, 2009, 06:03:13 pm »
I just bought a DG pipe from Weekend Warriors who are good to deal with.
The chap from there emailed me saying that approx. three weeks ago the postage situation has changed with regards to the maximum size allowed into Australia via Australia Post. he now cannot fit it into the box required to send it. What a pain in the butt. His suggestion was to send it to a friend in NZ and forward it that way.
Anyone had this issue and have a way around it?

Had the same issue Brad and the only option I could find was have the pipe cut cleanly on a weld and reweld it when it arrives..works fine for my stuff as it's all used and abused anyway but for a new pipe it's obviously not the ideal method. It was the US Postal Service that limited the size to between 36 - 46 inches and it had little or nothing to do with Australia Post, I don't think it matters if it comes here or NZ or anywhere as far as I know the limit is set globally :-\ 42 inch max Prioety Mail International and 46 inch max using the more expensive Global Express Guaranteed but it arrives in 3 days.

Brad i had that problem once..with that RM pipe that dodgy now has. The seller cut it in half then i got it welded up when it arrived here.
Funny how i've bought pipes since with no problems.

I had a 2 stroke 'up' pipe for RM/PE (about same size as the one 414 has shown above) sent here wrapped in bubble wrap and sheet cardboard for $41 USD via USPS about 3 months ago. It sounds like its getting hard to bring in larger items  ??? Most of the time i have found different post offices over there tell people different things and it seems each one has its own set of rules as to what can and can not be sent etc ::) I have had guys shop around at different PO's till they get one that will ship stuff here that another PO doesnt want to ship.

just measured my pipe and its 32 inches long. With the wrapping i guess it would have been 33.

its all to do with length of the box they have a size limit.i just got a sx125 ktm pipe for a mate son.just the pipe in 1 peice.the problem arises when the muffler and pipe are 1 ie honda 1973/4 cr250s.at 1 stage dg over here were matching usa prices for pipes in stock here.

I think it is like what the person on the other side of the counter wants to accept. I have asked him to wrap the crap out of it in bubble wrap and a bit of cardboard so it isn't able to be cubed. If he cant do that then I will get him to cut the tail pipe off. I have bought heaps of pipes with no issues before. I have also bought a pipe for my modern trailie and I haven't been told of any postage issues.

Brad , I have just received a reply from  "Dirt overstock " with regards to a RM 400 T new DG pipe

Same story as you got .....     Quote "Regrettably this pipe is too large to be shipped via the postal service, as it exceeds the maximum allowable size into Australia . We would have to send it via Fedex or UPs and that would cost $400-00 USD "

Stew there is a way. Its just this seller thats the prob. get it through DC plastics as Allthings 414 got his DG YZ pipe from them no probs. Or get Dirtoverstock to ship the pipe to a friend in USA and then get them to send it to you. The pipe is way under the 42 inch limit if its any close to a 250 RM pipe. Sounds like dirt over stock just cant be stuffed.

It is the cubed length that is the problem, not the actual length. They need to get creative is all. It needs to be wrapped rather than put in a box so they can't measure it.

Hey Guys,
Here is the issue:

According to usps.com, Max. length 42 inches, max. length plus girth combined 79".

So, length + height x2 + width x2 must be smaller than 79".

Our common box size is 28"x16"x10" which puts us at 80". Those boxes get through with no problems. We mail at least 5 international a day, so our post office no longer checks the measurements.

I have many packages that slip through with a combined 100 inches length + girth.

No complaints yet, they gladly accept our money. :)
