$4 million trail bike park for Beaudesert, QLD
Posted: Tuesday, 1st December, 2009 : 2:36 PM - - 1092 Reads -
The Queensland State Government and the South East Queensland's mayors have reached an agreement to build a $4 million trail bike park near Beaudesert according to the Brisbane Times.

According to Tony Moore's article the State Government has agreed to set aside 745 hectares of land at Wyaralong, about 25 kilometres west of Beaudesert, and has promised $1 million to get the plan off the ground.

The first stage of the special-purpose project will include basic camping facilities, 30 kilometres of trails, signage, a natural terrain motocross course, parking area and toilets.

The second stage could include the addition of power and showers to camping areas, a specialist motocross track - with a race tower, spectator area and starting gates - additional trails, signage, and a kiosk or cafe.

Lord Mayor Campbell Newman and Premier Anna Bligh made the announcement today after councils spent more than a year trying to find a suitable space for trail bike riding.

Ms Bligh said off-road trail bike riding was a legitimate recreational pursuit that had become increasingly popular in Queensland.

"But illegal trail bike riding is a major issue in our suburbs and this new facility will give people a place to ride their motorbikes legally," she said.

"Trail biking is a fantastic and exciting sport but it requires careful management in appropriate environments."

Earlier this month, Queensland's Environment Department listed illegal trail biking on its hit list of problem issues for 2010.

The department said unauthorised bike trails harm wildlife and plants and cause severe erosion.

Bike riders who deliberately ignored designated trails would face an on-the-spot fine of $100 and anyone who constructed an illegal track or jump would face a fine of up to $1,000.

Cr Newman, the chairman of the South-East Queensland Council of Mayors, said a solution had to be found because more than 230,000 now enjoyed trail bike riding as an outdoor activity.

"Illegal trail bike riding has long been a blight on some of Brisbane's pristine bushland areas, and has caused major headaches not only for the council and police but residents too," Cr Newman said.

"While most people do the right thing and ride only in designated areas, others have been venturing on to private or council-owned land and even residential streets.'

Cr Newman said the State Government owned site at Wyaralong was a good balance.

"It's ideally positioned within easy reach of trail bike riders not only from Brisbane but across South East Queensland," he said.

Motorcycling Queensland general manager Lindsay Granger welcomed the decision and said MQ had tried to find suitable land for a long time.

"It's long overdue," Mr Granger said.

"But I think it's great.

"Generally speaking if we can get land within an hour of Brisbane, we can get a great demand from motorcyclists from the greater Brisbane area."

I wish we could get bike areas to ride down in victoria for the kids, not so much moto-x as there is already loads of clubs for that, but it would be good to have big propertys for kids to be able to just ride around say loops out bush as I know my son and his mates just want to ride bush tracks there not into the moto-x thing, but I dont see anything like that being talked about here and its a shame.

Cheers Mick.

not sure, but that 25km west of Beaudesert puts it around the area of the properties that the RTCB has used for the last 25 years for trailrides (ie, Smithies or Michael Joyces').  Both of which were resumed for the Wyaralong Dam.

It's about 80 k's from the centre of Brisbane and 50 or 60 k's from the Gold Coast (far enough from the Schoolies......dickheads!!! ). I think it may be Smithies old property- we use to have a great vintage track there years ago. I'm not sure but I think Ray Buccannon had something to do with it, he's had some trail rides there and has been talking with the Goverment oficials about it for quite a while. Smithies would be ideal as it already has trails through the bush and a couple of cleared areas, and it's only 25 min's from where I live!!!.

Popeye is working on the dam near there as we speak. It's between Beaudesert and Boonah and about 45min sth of Brissy. About as far south as Maleny is from the north.
Common Alison, do you need me to take your hand and lead you there?.
Great news, but interesting that about 6 months ago we were asked to respond to a questionaire about dirt bike riding in sth east Qld and we thought there might be an option to get some land and build a park with Govt. help. Turns out the descision was already made and someone else got the gig.

They are looking here in the west too ,but it always makes me wonder about the supervision.
Conondale is just magic and the ideal set up.  :-*
Wonder which MCClub or who will get control of this new facility/ride park ?
cheers

Me thinks it will be private enterprise but with 200k plus riders in Qld you think MAQ should get a finger in the pie.

will be good if it all goes ahead and dont turn to shit.theres been talk for a long time in local papers about a track in that area, theres a place at south ripley near ipswitch not council approved but council dont seem to mind.there was also talk of black duck valley reopening dont know if it did or not a couple of blokes who worked there supposedly bought the property and were going to reopen it with an anual fee of $1200 per bike and that basically gave you a key for the gate to use at your own leisure.hope it does all happen.

The Ripley track is 10 mins from my home and is by invite only. Some dregs get there though and the track prep is shit. The council want the owners to upgrade the road in before they will give them the go ahead, but 5 ks of roadworks and bituman is out of the question.
Getting a key to the gate and being left to yourselves sounds great - until the shit hits the fan and some one dies.
I think/hope this (Beaudesert) is the first real track with govt. interest and it's up to us to make it work. As happened at Black Duck, it only takes a couple of dick haeds to stuff it up though, and the more you say or plead with the idiots, the worse they get.

ripley is not invite only i found there ph number on some website been there a few times with the kids.as for track prep its the same as riding in the bush but you cant get busted for it.you just have to ring and book, not many people get in free anymore they have people watching and the owners aiso do regular drives around in there 4wd.the key part is for black duck valley dont know if it ever went ahead but not agood idea like you said, and to expensive would cost my family $7400 for a year and just not worth it.i like ripley its a good place marked tracks yeah a bit rough but from a bush bashers point of view thats what its all about, when we go ther its always a ball and the kids love the pee wee track.cheers gary....ialso hope tha one at beaudesert goes ahead and having a wife at logan council and knowing there are a lot of riders work at the council maybe something positive will happen.

I think there was a place near me for a while but if you charge some one to ride on your property insurances etc etc if they have a crash are over the top and like most guys it wouldnt matter you crash you get back up again and get over it but some people love to be in court ripping people off so either they had to ride for free or not at all that was why it shut down. :)
