modern bike question - 08 ktm 530
« on: November 11, 2009, 07:30:33 pm »
A guy I know has one and has had a few issues. Mainly excessive oil consumption. The situation may have turned a bit nastier over the weekend though.

Just wondering if anyone had any experiences with this model?

oil consumption is a problem with current model 4 stroke ktms
they all do it either keep feeding it rings
or buy a 2 smoker ;)

then it can blow all the smoke it likes ;D

EXCR  motors, both 450 and 530 have definitely had a few issues with oil consumption, poor ring design and a fault with the primary drive gear ( a two piece pressed together design on the 08, changed to a welded design on 09) to blame. Call Bruce Bolton at Bolton motorcycles on 03 54222255 and he has a good fix for the issues, and 99.99% guaranteed to have necessary parts in stock.

KTM 2 strokes have their own problems, mainly jetting issues. (well the 250 sx's anyway)

the 09 450 have a problem with the cam bearing pressed in to far the seal then dosnt seal  this lets the oil in to the vacum hose on the rocker cover which is then sucked in to the carbi and the oil is burnt with the air fuel mixture the other problem is the oil scrapper ring end gap is to small causing the ring to flex losing its ablity to seal properly

Geez, sounds like you've gotta be rich to own one of these new fangled jiggers.  :D
A mate of mine had a YZ450F that blew a big end before he wore out his first set of chain and sprockets. And the dealer expressed no surprise at that.  :o

Unfortunately the 530 is a piece of junk  :-\

KTM really got it wrong in my opinion, In my group of trailriding mates we have owned probably 50 520/525's since 2000. A few minor dramas but when it came time for a new model we automatically bought a new KTM. Now with the 530 that has all changed we are all looking for a new brand to go to. The few guys that were unlucky enough to by the 530 are spewing and have them for sale.

One guys bike has done 3000k has been torn down under warranty and is still a noisy oil burning piece of shit!

But the worst thing is on the 530 they have moved all the power to the top end, it revs an extra 2000rpm so instead of being able to plod up a hill using all the torque you have to rev the guts out of it and get on the clutch like riding a 250 4stroke.

My mate has complained all the way to the top at KTM and their response is that they have tried to make the new KTM's more revvy like the jap bikes because that is what everyone wants ??? Thats funny, I thought KTM's became popular because they weren't like the jap bikes ::)

I rode a 530 again on Friday last week up in the high country...was very happy to hand it back!
Looking fo a TZ750 anyone with any leads please PM

I love the older 520/525 (and even the bulletproof 400).....what's so different to cause these obviously big problems that weren't so apparent in the early models? I was toying with getting a 530 but don't want a Lemon, I've got enough vintage ones!

COMPLETELY different engine Firko! IMHO, the RFS motor (early 250 - 525) was the ants pants and did everything well. The new motor does nothing for me. My '05 450 is a stump puller that shames the new motors...who needs all the power towards the top end? Gets mighty tiring towards the end of the ride!
Destined to a life behind bars. A garage full of KTM's and a 73 CR 250M Honda....H7 250 Monty will be at Harrow!

Own a `08 530 and have for 2 1/2 yrs and not had one single problem

Mick 22...If you have to fan the clutch on a 530 like a 250 may i suggest you change down from 6th gear

Owned a `04 525 also ( 2 oil filters...2 screens, head shake like all F..K ) ....Give me a 530 anytime

I guess if you ride around on billard tables its not an issue  :)
Ride a 525 and a 530 back to back on the same hill and you'll see what I mean
