A question for the PE guys
« on: June 22, 2009, 08:03:54 pm »
I have a PE175 wreck. I've removed the ignition coil and it only has one wire, white with a blue trace from memory (left it at work)

Is this right for the bike?

Second, what resistance readings should I get from the primary and secondary winding?

Looks like the bike is an 82-83 from what's left of it. Most of it was rusted junk so I haven't offered it up here. I only grabbed it for the XR250R front end that was fitted.

Thanks

Brent

yes, white with a blue trace is correct. see pp51 of the PE175Z Owners Manual.

if you have the manual down, look at pp29 and blow it up large. You will see the coil pretty clearly and the single w/bl wire coming off. The earth appears to be the mounting bolt rather than a separate b/w wire.

Leith - do you have a Z coil handy to confirm?

no i dont have a 175 Z coil. only 250Z which is same as T/X and has 2 wires

is the coil grey?

my 175 Z manual shows a Black/white going to CDI which is also common to earth and white/blue going to CDI. these are usually in a double black connector

primary -black/white to white/blue - 0-1 ohms
secondary - plug wire to black/white or white/blue - 10-11 ohms for Australian E24 & 01/general models ( other countries 20-21 ohms)

these specs same for 82-84 models. i checked all the wiring diagrams and they clearly show 2 wires coming from the coil.

The coil is grey and only has the one wire, white with blue.

I haven't had a chance to compare the readings yet but if it has the same resistances as an SR500 Yamaha coil I'll be able to use it on my XT500. The standard SR coil is too big to fit under an XT/TT tank when you run an SR CDI setup.

Several people are looking for an alternate coil.

Thanks

i dont think the PE coil will be compatible as a SR500 replacement. Correct me if im wrong but SR500 has DC ignition with external pick up coil? PE is AC-HV.

Bugger! :(

I'm going to have to look into this a bit more.

I'm not sure if the generator is DC but I've been told they are a three phase setup.

More to learn....................................................

3 phase has nothing to do with the ignition, that is the design of the alternator lighting/charging coils. you will need a regulator rectifier with minimum 3 yellow wires a black and red wire.

generator/alternator will be putting out AC that goes into the reg/rect and is made into DC and regulated for charging the battery. Im pretty sure the ignition is DC on SR meaning the primary voltage is comming from the 12 volt battery. on an AC system like a PE, the primary voltage is self generated as soon as the flywheel starts turning.
