will a 85 yz125 piston go into a yz125e 78 model? they both share the same bore/stroke and piston pin so does anyone know or tried this combo?

Yes, it will work.
Yamaha has a squillion different part numbers because they were forever tweaking stuff like the number and thickness of rings and the skirt cut-away, but the pistons are 100% interchangable. They will all also interchange with DT and IT125 pistons.

I know that Wiseco has a different part number for the 85 compared to the earlier bikes, but I can't spot the difference.

The YZ-A piston kits have a different part number because they use a different ring to suit the chrome bore. The piston itself is 100% interchangable.

The good thing about telling the truth is that you don't have to remember what you said.
