The Nightmare Racing plastic is very good, i've put it on my KX500 and i'm more than happy. An Ohlins shock is the best way to go but will set you back around $1600 or so. A service and regas on your standard shock will do the job ok.

Personally i know of 4 other 83/84 KX500's that could be for sale, however the owners have an over inflated view of their value. I look at like this. A good clean (restored) 83/84 KX5 is worth four to five thousand. Looking at a 2nd hand unit, If the rear shock is gone, which most are, it will cost $500 to get the stock one back to reasonable condition and $1600 for an aftermarket replacement. Most will have a trashed expansion chamber so you are looking at another $500. At best (if you do it yourself) an engine rebuild in parts will cost you $800 to 1K and pray that the kick starter mechanism is o/k. Throw a set of tyres, chains and sprockets levers, grips etc and there is another couple of hundred $ If you want to go the nightmare plastics route you will have to find another $400 dollars. Back it all out and you will find that a $1800, needs a resto bike is not good value unless it has some of the above already done. Bikes around the $1200 to $1500 represent the best value. There are some golden nuggets around, the 83 that was sold in Mildura some time back for $1800 or therabouts had a Ohlins shock in the back so the money for the bikle was well woth it.

I'd have to agree with you on the value on unrestored bikes Bahnsy, for some reason people see a nice example of their bike go for 5 grand and think their unrestored clunker is worth the same. I bought the '84 KX500 from Mildura with the ohlins shock, and that was what persuaded me to buy it because it needed an engine rebuild also. I paid $1525 for it.

You listed all the economics well Bahnsy, what a bike is worth is balanced by what it will need.
But buying a bike is a bit like playing Monopoly, sometimes the dice don't roll your way so you have to spend big to gain some properties otherwise your just not in the game.
I think too sometimes the high prices paid is because guys get sick of looking, often missing out on good buys by a few dollars, or finding out about something just after it's been sold can be very frustrating. Have this happen a few times & you will be willing to fork out for that model you always wanted.
