Are they heavy-duty clutch springs? Is the actuating lever on the engine placed 90 degrees to the cable pull?

Does the clutch work? Check that first. Did you check the basket fingers for wear? Also what model RM?

could be 40 year old springs were softer than the new ones? or is it unreasonable difficult.

Simple things and if its working and wear has been checked its outside of the case for the issue. If clutch is all good it will be cable and perch. Also check the cable routing and shout it a new ca le as the inner liner will be worn.

They are a heavy clutch ...adjustment
Needs to set internal , by a lead screw that takes up the
Slack on thepush rod ....make sure the ball bearing is installed
Between both rods
