Cleaning old fuel out an XT500 fuel tank?
« on: July 18, 2016, 05:35:26 pm »
Just wanted to know if anyone has tried cleaning years of old fuel out of an aluminum fuel tank. Its got layers of lacquer type buildup and globules of resin around the fuel tap. Most loose stuff is out but there still lots stuck inside. Saw some suggestions of using vinegar and/or acetone? Any suggestions please. cheers

I have used Septone Alibrite to clean out alloy tanks.

Have you tried white vinegar, buy a couple of litres cheap from woollies or coles, fill tank up and let it sit for a few days

varnish isnt rust so the traditional acidic or electrolysis  methods dont work. carby cleaner cleans carbs up pretty damn good and dissolves all the varnish in them.

whats in carb cleaner?
Ingredient
Toluene
Acetone
Methyl Alcohol
Propane
Diacetone Alcohol

Varnish is paint so anything that thins paint will dissolve fuel varnish.

I'm going to give vinegar a try first then acetone if it doesn't dissolve. Cheers
