Local verses overseas
« on: October 07, 2015, 10:13:20 am »
Had the radio on yesterday and happened to hear a caller talking about where he buys supplies for his business.   He repairs and restores old pinball and poker machines and said that if he buys glass locally it costs about $130 a sheet for the size and type he uses, but if he buys from the US it is $20 each.   He gets 10 at a time and pays around $180 to $200 for postage, this works out at less than a third of the cost of sourcing it locally.
The part of what he said that interested me most was when he stated that he also sends any chrome plating needed to the US as well and including postage this is also far cheaper and very little difference in waiting time.  I doubt I would risk losing any of my motorcycle parts by doing this but it's understandable that some might.  He said if he had to buy from local suppliers he would have to close down.
I am not suggesting that we all go out and do this I am just relating what was said.

It's a world market now. I live near Nowra NSW  & the motorcycle shops are much the same. The other day I saw a banner in a industrial side of town wemoto.com.au So I went in & had a look the bloke said the company is based in the UK & have just opened there first outlet here. They just supply parts. I mentioned a few old bikes & he didn't laugh or pull a face he just looked it up,on the computer & said yes or no. Straight away I new I just found my first port of call for parts in the future. We as Australians are no longer producing our own goods. So what ever you buy came from overseas to start with. Don't get me wrong I love this country I've got it tattooed on my arm. I've climbed
Ayers rock swam Katherine gorge  & made water tanks in Darwin. So I know how lucky we are to be born to this land. It's still a world market. Jimson

Depends what happens with the exchange rate, and if the $1000 tax free threshold is lowered on imports to nil or $20(July 2017) old mate will go out of business.
