Polishing lower fork legs (internal)
« on: August 04, 2014, 07:00:09 pm »
Putting a set of 86 model forks on a 84 (disk brake) CR80

Drama is I have good Chrome on the upper tubes 84 and totally f'd 86 tubes.

I can't see why I can't use the 84 upper tubes in the 86 bottom tubes.

The 86 bottoms aren't great inside so I want to polish them up before using them
I was going to put them up in the lathe and scotch brite them.

Anyone else done this? Any better ideas ? :o

Easy way out is to cut a slot in the end of a bit of round bar, 10-12mm.
Slip a section of fine emery strip into the slot and wrap around, using kero or some type of cutting fluid and your hand drill on a slow speed and correct direction, hone out the inner leg.
Rinse and repeat.

You can get a large phillips head screwdriver or a piece of 12mm steel round bar tape the start of a bit of scotchbrite to it then wrap it round in the right direction put that into a pistol drill, you can use that to hone the inside of the lowers.

You can more or less do the same thing with the lathe except you turn the fork leg with the lathe and use the slotted bar on the tool post.
