What the? TM/RM125 Clutch Springs
« on: June 20, 2008, 02:24:50 pm »
OK, I'll figure this out once I pull the clutch out. But I am planning on replacing the plates and springs in the RM125M's clutch, and on getting the springs today I see they work by retaining them with a pin. So they work on extension rather than compression. But how? I am buggered if I can figure iit out. Can someone explain? There is no obvious way of fixing the other end. Is there some sort of interference fit? Am I just a thickie? It doesn't seem at all obvious... Please tell me now, cos it'll be another week or so before I actually open it up. I know the TM is the same but I paid someone to rebuild that!

Graeme,
The springs have a loop on the outside end where the pin goes but the inside end screws into a thread in the clutch basket that matches the spring. You can increase the preload on the clutch by winding the springs further in.
I can't remember the number of turns to set the springs to start with though. Might be in the TM manual? maybe? hopefully?

Make yourself up a hook and buy a set of needle nose pliers , while your at it
magnetize a srew drive to fetch those pins from the casing  ;)
The springs are as Brent has described - manual ..... check that the springs are at least even with , but not protruding back of sleeve hub  ( figure 49    page 90   clymer Suzuki manual

same clutch as the 185  but different pressure plate Graeme.

screw the springs in  all the way till they feel home . then unscrew them between 0.5 and 3.0 turns for New plates depending on how you like your clutch feel.

can adjust them in  if you feel any slipping or it feels too tight .

And if you loose one of those pins, the pins from an old swingarm bearing works a treat.  ;D

i agree with oldfart screw springs in till they are flush with the  the back of the inner hub and do not protrude at all

Thanks guys, much appreciated. Sounds pretty ingenious - I'll look forward to getting it all sorted. Last race meeting I got beat to the first corner by a few CR250s and 480s. This should sort em out...

Suzuki's are like that  ;)

it is a great idea though and stops the need for packing washers under springs to increase pressure. You'll be sure to smoke those pesky Honda's now Graeme! :P

A very very sensible tip :o  I even shoo the kidlets and dog away when doing this job ;)
