Thanks for the advise. Most of it I can comply with. Thinking back I recon I know the biggest contributor to my stuffed gear. In an attmpt to lighten everything up, the gear stick was drilled to the shithouse. While it contributed to the diet the xl went on, it also made it very flexible. Every now and then my big hoof or some other object would give it a bang and it would then start catching on the side cover every time I changed gears. This was a little disconcerting
sometimes as you would be left in limbo land with no drive until it became unstuck from the case. In the mean time the brain had not registered the problem - the throttle would still be twisted. Drive would be rediscovered in a fashion not to the liking of the gearbox. :'(
Anyway thats my diagnosis. (note to self : Piss that gearstick off before you reck soomething else)
I have a spare 350 mtr but wasnt wanting to pull it appart yet. I have a scrapped SL 250 mtr and have been comparing the gearing ratios. They are all a bit closer, so was thinking with a bit of final drive gearing change it might make a good gearbox set up. I dont know if anyone has tried it and what the consequences are.
That might be my next posting on XL's - "What not to do with a gearbox!"
